Setting mtu an rwin manually. Before doing this I recommend using system restore to back up your settings (ie. take a restore point). I also would write the current values down before you begin to "play". Some have claimed that you don't need to reboot for setting changes to take affect; my experience has been otherwise and it makes the process of tweaking a tad slow.
I have doubts this is a specific hardware limitation as mentioned with FSB and slower processors; these speed are way too slow to tax any recent hardware and doesn't explain why for some scenarios speeds obtained are about what is advertised. Also most data paths in systems are symmetrical in vs out |
Thanks rickster, i've downloaded Drtcp but when I run the app it does not show my Novatel modem in the adapter settings window...any suggestions? |

| MorenoEnNYC : Sorry not familiar with that specific hardware. Could it be just looked at by the system as a modem ? In which case all the settings are the general settings and I think there is an MTU to set for dialup too. But I have to admit I've never used it on a modem/dialup connection. YMMV Good luck |

Usually I would've, but I had to run off right after. The tests were minutes apart though and if you had seen the NetMeter graphs, well... the FF2 looked just like hitting some sort of bandwidth bottleneck, basically a brickwall capped at around 200 kb/sec. The IE7 plot looked much more like a higher bandwidth link being shared with other traffic. I will try a repeat test as soon as I have time.
| rickster wrote: | | If this is consistent behavior with FF I'd try playing with MTU/RWIN either with registry editing or using DrTCP. As of right now nothing more comes to mind. |
Yeah, already played with RWIN a bit and only minor impact. I have my doubts about MTU being off. I've played with that in the past and every tool I've used to check the TCP settings says the MTU value is good.
At this point I think my next step is a post to the Mozilla forums.
| rickster wrote: | Worst case if you don't upload much ... use IE when you do large files. You know the joke about the guy who goes to the doc and says: "You know it hurts when I do this ..." |
LOL. I hear ya. Unfortunately, at this point I'm in full software debug mode and when I am, I never like to let the bug win. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve. |

| Walter wrote: | OK, latest data for uploads. I found a file share site from the site that rickster recommended. I used Quicksharing.com. FF2 and IE7 both running at the same time. Uploaded two different zip files. One was the 1.00 firmware for the DIR-450 router and was 3,972 KBytes in size. The other file was the 1.01 firmware and was 4,202 KBytes in size. Results:
FF2 using 1.00 firmware zip file 3972 KB in 197 seconds = 161 kb/sec upload speed. Netmeter verified that upload speeds stayed near or under 200 kb/sec at all times with little fluctuation.
IE7 using 1.01 firmware zip file 4202 KB in 78 seconds = 420 kb/sec. Netmeter verified that upload speeds peaked at around 700 to 800 kb/sec and fluctuated significantly during the upload.
Whatever this problem is, it can affect real file transfers. |
I'm wondering if the problem is that you are trying to download and upload with two browsers simulataneously. If so, they may be armwrestling for the port with IE winning. This might also produce large pauses in one browser while the other has the port and then pauses in the other, etc, where as one browser might only experience short pauses. |

Nope, it's definitely a config issue. like i said I have 4 laptops. 2 Dell M70s, 1 Dell X300 and a Sony Vaio VGN-UX380N..all with clean installs of XP Pro...
Upload Speeds:
Both M70s consistently max out @ 800-900 Kbps (90-110 KB/s)
The Smaller Dell X300 and Sony Vaio consistently max out at 200-250 Kbps (20-28KB/s)
Download Speed:
Across the board all 4 machines are almost at 1MB |

To clarify:
| MorenoEnNYC wrote: | Upload Speeds:

| For both IE and FF.
| MorenoEnNYC wrote: | ... The Smaller Dell X300 and Sony Vaio consistently max out at 200-250 Kbps (20-28KB/s)
| For FF, but IE still maxes out? |

Rickster,
Both are based on IE6 and IE7 and more so on FTP uploads to servers here in NY as well as all over the country. I work for a photo agency and I deal in mostly uploading imagery via FTP.
I've gone as far as setup a FTP server on my desktop computer here at home and uploaded a 5MB file to this server from each of the 4 laptops using the EVDO Rev a U720 modem. Same results. |

MorenoEnNYC,
Sorry, I don't have much more to help just trying to clarify the situation for all. The original post here was with regard to seeing difference in upload on the same machine between IE and FF. Your situation seems slightly different. It's not between the browsers on the machine, but the differences in speeds seen among several different machines. |

I have lately been running these tests with both FF2 and IE7 running at the same time, but this is mostly so I can run the tests back to back quickly. I definitely see the 200kb/sec (or so) upload limit in FF2 when running FF2 alone. Except for the one Everest speed test site. Oh, and the Costco image upload, but that used some sort of Costco browser addin to do the uploads.
I still suspect this is some sort of Windows configuration setting that IE 7 is changing for itself at runtime.
Oh, and I happened to be chatting with one of our IT guys at work about this and he suggested checking to make sure any firewall software is not a factor since they usually shim themselves between the apps and the TCP stack, so could have an impact. Something else to check at least. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve. |

I think I may have tracked this down. At least partially. Take a look at this speed test taken just a few minutes ago:
Firefox 2.0.0.3
So for the answer, send your check or money order to...
Just kidding.
I want to try a few more tests before posting what I found. Back soon I hope. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve. |

Walter,
If you used IE during your test you will see upload speeds matching those of which you should be getting using Rev A. Make sure you test using FTP as well and make sure you use this site... http://miranda.ctd.anl.gov:7123/ |

| I have a strong feeling this will be no easy fix...ultimately I think Novatel will have to get involved and figure this out. |
