I don't know about your part of the world but to rent an apartment around here you have a credit check run and to run a credit check you need Name, SSN, address, etc.
Sprint's requirments are the same with all wireless carriers in the US on post paid accounts. If you don't want a credit check run go pre-paid.
While this may be a silly comment, note that the business information only applies if you are asking for a business liable account. For a personal account they just need your personal information.

The real question is this...
If I wanted to rent an apartment, I would give a first and last and possibly security and animal deposit.

hell, in my part of the world, before they will even let you look at any apartment i might want to consider renting, they take a damn photocopy of my driver's license.
why do i LET them do that?
because if i don't, i can't have a place to stay.
do you HAVE to give sprint all that info?
nope.
only if you want to get their service, i think. |

well, you started it.
next time, don't bring logic with you,
when you want to discuss carriers and their policies! |

The info is needed so that the entire collection industry can be triggered to hound you should you default on your bill. Less stressfull than when the Sopranos might be called.
Unfortunately you can also be held liable for identity theft. (I've always dreamed of someone stealing mine and buying a brand new house, big car, diamonds, etc. and then claiming it all since it is in my name!)
It does seem unair that the credit industry so owns the lawmakers that they can buy such a law. It would seem that they would be the ones liable for THEIR error since they have every resource available to verify. Perhaps someday when dna credit cards and checks are available...
Maybe we should begin a political movement to free people from the tyranny of identity theft and make the industry totally responsible and have to eath the loss caused by the thief instead of passing it on to an innocent person. |
