The past few days I have been having a heck of a time with the Sprint supplied DNS servers. I'll be connected and able to ping by IP, but nothing will resolve. I switched my router to provide some that I entered rather than acquire them from the Sprint network and am able to browse normally.

Is this a Sprint network wide DNS outage/burp, some servers or is something else afoot with my connection? Is there any particular benefit to using a Sprint DNS vs an external public DNS?

Take a look at OpenDNS at:

http://www.opendns.com

It is outstanding, smart, fast and reliable.

I have been using it for the past 6 months on everything I use. Makes a big difference in the speed of resolving DNS.

Hope this helps.

I second that on openDNS I've been using them for awhile and have been happy with them.

I got started with them when I had cable and comcast kept having DNS outages, I switch over to openDNS and haven't looked back.

Up until I got EVDO, I used to use 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 with my WISP, mainly because they're easy to memorize, and I ping them about as low as anything. Very Happy

Thanks for the OpenDns recommendation.

I have always used my own DNS servers, in order to have more control and avoid downtime.

I gave OpenDns a quick try and they are very fast. Thanks!

I just changed my DNS. I'm impressed... I also have been experiencing very slow connections. Seems much better!

Same here. I just changed my server to use OpenDNS and web page access does seem noticeably snappier.

When I was on satellite I definitely used servers from OpenDNS because the Hughes ones really sucked. When I switched to Sprint I just let it acquire theirs and and every now and then the connection would just seem to die and only after messing around with it this week did I realize it was just DNS. The problem was further masked by machines I have set static on my network that still used OpenDNS servers. :::sigh:::

So the general feeling is that Sprints DNS servers are slow and/or twitchy? Sounds like a good entry for the FAQ.

Thanks everyone!

I just tried opendns and compared to Sprint's using the nslookup command. Was the same speed.

I wonder if the DNS address is different per home agent? I'll have to try different HAs and see if there is a difference.

Which HAs are you using? I'm on the Atlanta ones and they seem to be very slow...

I just tried different HAs and it always uses a DNS server in Omaha. Could be cached. nslookups were instant nevertheless.

Maybe DNS is not assigned by HA but region of towers?

I tried Atlanta HA but still get DNS server in Omaha....
Default Server: omhadns01.spcsdns.net
Address: 68.28.90.11

You can tell by running 'nslookup' at a command prompt.

I just checked, I get:

resolver1.opendns.com
208.67.222.222

Did you change the TCP/IP setting for the card in your connection manager? That's how I changed mine.

Yup, I get opendns if I set to that. I'm talking about Sprint's, which doesn't appear to change based on HA address. I tried 5 or 6 different HAs but still get the same DNS server.

If you set back to Sprint's, which DNS does it assign you to? Omaha's is instant for me.
