Mine has only been either "No Signal" or "Excellent". Is anyone getting anything else (like "Poor", "Good", etc.)?

Like some others have mentioned I can be connected and still show "No Signal". Seems to resolve itself eventually, but still bizarre.

What router do you have?

It is interesting...I have always gotten Excellent, but then, with out moving the router at all, it's gone to Good, but it's still sitting in the same place I've always had it in. Getting the same performance results.

The WRT54GS3G-ST running 2.00.9. Is this what you has as well?

Mine has always said "Excellent", but I hardly consider -90dB at best to be "excellent".

Yep,
That is the router I have also. I have been getting in the -80 to -85 range and it said excellent until just a couple of weeks ago, now saying good. The other odd thing that I can't understand is, I actually get better reception downstairs in the basement, than upstairs, which makes NO sense to me. I can stand by a window, less than 1 mile from the tower on the main floor, get a signal of -85. Then, go downstairs and stand DIRECTLY under where I was upstairs, by the window down there..get signal between -75 and -80.

I've just about given up on trying to understand what affects the signal.
Confused

The art of figuring out the attributes of signal strength vs throughput has had me scratching my head too.

I have been using one of these antennas:
with one of these routers on EVDO Rev A.
which helps about 3 db over not using it. Which, of course is what it is rated at. But I think I am correct when I say that what is occurring at the tower site is more important.

For example, 2 days ago I suddenly jumped from an average of 500kbps to 1000kbps consistently. I am fortunate to have a friend who is an RF engineer for Sprint and he told me the "gang" was upgrading software at each of the cell tower sites. So after they reboot the computers they see improvements. I live in Racine, WI so your "gang" might not be doing that right now. Very Happy

The technology we are using, as far as I am concerned, is truely state of the art stuff. We are mere mortal consumers but the rocket scientists in the computer design labs who make this stuff work are the real genius's. It's MAGIC. I have begun to just accept what I get and just enjoy it. Maybe that is the best advice of all. Just think......it is only gonna get better over time and hopefully cheaper too.

Cheers

I can't disagree with that at all. I am just looking to maximize what I have now, just to make sure there isn't something little I can do that will gain me a little speed. I wasn't sure where the line was between the signal strength and loss of speed. Very Happy

You may get some more ideas on how to improve your throughput speeds by looking at my posting at the following thread:

Now, I have seen that..but is that only for the S720? I have the AC595 card.

How are you getting your numbers for signal strength? Where in the router does it show that?

You can't from the router, I'm just getting those when I put the card in my laptop and go off of that.

Rev A is turned on now..except latency..same results..nothing different..would it be worth messing with the HA still?

Heh heh, I had the same thing when I was looking to place my external antenna. I did all my initial testing on my main floor and got lower signal moving up a floor. Moving to the attic was even worse. This weekend I am going to try and put it on the same mast as my UHF antenna (10' above the peak, which is 30' up in the air) to test that location.

My area is a big Sprint dead zone where all the nearby tower lobes must be aimed toward other areas. The mapped Rev A ends right at my property line but I can still reach it. My dad lives up a small hill from me, but even further from the mapped area and he gets the same signal strength with the internal booster antenna that I get with the external trucker. :::sigh:::
