I have been testing my AC580 (*) card and getting "whiffs" of EVDO in these places:

San Jose International Airport (SJC)
Santa Clara University

And a pal caught a Whiff at SFO just yesterday evening.

SJC, and the University were live for most of June and early July, but were dormant this last week.

If you find any Sprint EVDO in Silicon Valley, or up to San Francisco PLEASE POST IT HERE !

Thanks!

Ikimas

* please disregard my initial erroneous citation of the PC5220 - I am using AC580 on Sprint, PC5220 on Verizon.

Curious...

Were you using this tip on your PC5220:

Sniffing Out New EVDO Towers with a PC5220

Your Verizon PC5220 isn't going to get a whiff of Sprint signals, you were probably getting a whiff of new Verizon towers being tested.

My SF Bay Area VZW rep told me that the EVDO sites were running in the 3 Bay Area airports (SFO, OAK, and SJC) as of July 1, 2005. Roll-out to the rest of the Bay Area in the "September-October timeframe", which probably means Nov. 1, 2005.

there have already been other reports of coverage in San Francisco, see:

Forgive my confustion but.....NOT the PC5220 but the Sierra Wireless AC580.

I am not looking for Whiffs of Verizon, but Sprint, using the AC580 or other EVDO capable phones/aircards.

Thanks!

EV-DO is up in a majority of the bay, from Gilroy to Santa Rosa, and out to Livermore.

The service isn't launched yet, but it's been *very* fast at all the sites I've seen.

From what I understand, a lot of the nation is coming up fairly fast, and ahead of schedule.

Sprint's EVDO is unofficially running nearly metro-wide in many markets, well ahead of the official schedule. It works in nearly all of KC and St. Louis (both not scheduled until Oct) and also worked in Tampa when I was there. Our Minneapolis people said Sprint EVDO works there.

I asked our Sprint rep about it (at the HQ) and he said they have been activating EVDO on cellsites in 60 cities but the rollout schedule is about announcing after a metro has been fully tested and deemed ready for production. It's more of a marketing/production schedule than an availability schedule.

We have both Sprint/Verizon cards (both Merlin). Am getting avg 800K-1MB/sec on Sprint with peaks to 1.6MB. Am getting avg 600-800K on Verizon with few peaks over 1MB. Both have about same latency, 200-400ms typically.
