What's the story with car antennas?

I'm setting up a real-time weather telemetry station in my vehicle for storm chasing using a Samsung M610 tethered to my Powerbook G4 on the Sprint PCS network. I want to do whatever I can within reason to boost the signal to the phone, which does not have an external antenna connector. I've found antennas which don't require direct attachment to the phone. Does anyone have any experience with these? Do they work? Which one should I buy?

i've used a cell repeater with an amp, unless you're doing something that's bandwidth intensive i think you're not going to see a significant difference.
