|
|
I purchased a U720 from my local Sprint rep back in december, and was connecting 1xrtt with a ~600 ping up until a few weeks ago when EVDO Rev A was enabled on the tower I live near. I am now connecting with a signal strength of between -65 to -71dbm and my download speeds are 1250 down/135 up, but my latency is still around 400 ms at most times with occasional dips to 240ms at best.
I am currently using the flip up antenna on the U720 indoors with my laptop sitting next to a window with a LOS to the tower.
If the pings drop to 240ms on occasion, does this mean that there is a way to improve my signal thru adding an external antenna? I am not familiar with the science behind wireless connections, so I am wondering if there is any way to improve ping since it seems to occasionally dip to a lower figure. |

You have a very good signal, you really cant do much more to improve that signal. Anything you do do, will be a waste! Are you sure you are on Rev A? The easiest way is to hover your mouse over the little arrows. Your upload speed is rather low for Rev A. That is an average Rev 0 speed. Also, if you are on Rev 0 (which I am suspecting), then those pings are average for Rev 0. _________________

Thanks for the reply.
yes, I am able to verify that I am now on Rev A thru the connection info from the connection manager software. It reports EVDO CDMA with signal strengths between -65 to -71dbm. I've seen others report much lower latency figures, and even mine dips down to 240ms at times, which leads me to believe that there should be a way to maintain the lower latency. |

What it should be saying is 1xEVDO RevA like below whenever you rollover the signal strength bars...

The arrows/triangles are yellow tinged on Rev A, black only on Rev 0 and instead of three up/down arrows/triangles there is only one big one each direction with 1xRTT depending on which you are connected to.
In the CM Diagnostics and Information page I am pretty sure it says "EVDO Rev A" when you're connected to Rev A, just EVDO when on Rev 0 and 1xRTT when you're on that one.
If you pick up multiple networks you'll be able to tell which you're on when hovering over the signal strength icon bars as it will have a * next to it.
Based on what you've reported so far I don't think that you are on Rev A. While testing in other Rev A areas nearby I can hit sub 100 (including plenty well under 75 and several in the 50's). Your latency does seem high compared to what I hit with Rev 0 though. _________________ --Larry |

Mank, I am so jealous of your signal strength. (grin)
Your latency numbers are an indication to me that your Home Agent Addresses are incorrectly programmed. I had the exact same issue until I corrected them.
See the thread:

It will step you through the process. You will need the Master Lock Code to gain access which a Tier II support person can give you. Just be upfront about what you are doing and why and they should not have a problem allowing you access. That is what I did.
After changing mine the latency went from about 400ms down to under 200ms. (consistently, I might add)
Also see my story at this thread:

While the story is mainly about download speeds I can assure you that latency dramatically improved as well.
Good luck |

OK...it seems I was mistaken and am recently updated to Rev 0, and not Rev A.
but your reply regarding:

Got me to thinking: I noticed that sometimes when I do speed tests at speedtest.net, it reports me sometimes being in South Carolina, and on a few occasions in Florida. SO I'll give that a try and see what I come up with. Thanks for the input! |
