On a Mac and also on Windows (somewhere):

This little option in the Network Preferences:PPP and click the PPP Options button wil free you from having to click on the menu item to connect or open Internet Connect to click on the connect button.

When checked, it will automatically connect when you open Mail or Safari or other apps. There is the same delay as when you select Connect but you skip a step or two.

You will still need to select Disconnect when you need to.
