I've notice I've lost connection, or more specifically the KR1's light goes red more often over areas I've traveled before without a signal drop-out. Or maybe the signal simply got very weak but recovered a few seconds (or maybe a half minute) and then the data went over with the connection restored.
I may look into (stopping) the ping that detects when the card has lost connection.
I have Verizon, and their network can have a huge latency. In the tens of seconds at times. I had to increase my disconnect detection time for pulling GPS data.
When running something like Google Earth, things are drawn intermittently, and 1xRTT isn't usually enough bandwidth anyway, but I wouldn't notice a longer dropout between what was previously cached, and what comes in anew.
But maybe it is my card, but I can't see any problem with the connector, and the antennas I use seem to be the same. And I was getting full T1 speeds just last November. |

Actually, my KPC-650 broke. Fortunately I have a warranty through Verizon so I should get a replacement shortly.
Saturday, it went offline in an area I knew I had a signal, and after several tries it seems that the modem chip went offline.
(the KPC-650 is basically a USB hub connected to a USB-capable cell phone chipset, sans voice, packaged in a PCMCIA card - the hub still worked, so I had to jump through various hoops at Verizon - reinstall drivers, manager software, reboot, etc.). |
