|
|
If you want the best performance from EVDO (I assume that's all of us ), there is a parameter you should be aware of.
TCP Receive Window Size = 65536
The easiest way to check or change it is by downloading a copy of Dr TCP from Broadband Reports. http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp
This is not an endorsement, you can use other utilities or your registry editor to check. It's just free and very simple to use - and I especially like the "free" part.)
You cannot acheive the high data rates offered by EVDO unless you set this parameter as indicated. I consistantly operate at 1.8-2.0 M, with burst to 2.3. (I'm still looking for the 2.4, though )
This is one of the most commonly tweaked parameters to get faster throughput on DSL and cable modems. Works great for EVDO as well!
Admin: I have changed the name of this thread, for those searching for SuperCharged EVDO, they will hopefully find this thread and be able to speed up EVDO for free - vs. paying others charging over $200 for this tip |

Good tip, I used to do this on my old SAT connection, but never thought about it working on EVDO!

We have setup a page on EVDOinfo.com, that has related articles on how to speed up EVDO (Venturi, this thread, benchmarking, etc.)
Please take a look at the related articles to find out more about the different ways to speed up EVDO.
SuperCharged EVDO
Please note, we renamed this thead and quote the term SuperCharged EVDO, so that at some point, someone searching in the search engines will find this thread and be able to get the information for free, vs. paying Robert Kim for this information. So, when replying, be sure to include the word SuperCharged EVDO, since it will help rank this page higher in the search engines. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Scott:
I appreciate your comments, you are correct. There are indeed a lot of rumors floating around.
In reading your other posts, you certainly appear to understand the testing process, and I appreciate your posts.
If it's any consolation, however, I assure you the recommendation above comes straight from the EVDO engineers at Qualcomm. (As a reader may or may not know, Qualcomm pretty much "owns" the CDMA technologies.)
I have the luxury of focusing almost exclusively on the design and deployments of this technology. Not trying to impress you with credentials, but simply trying to assure you that this parameter suggestion is quite solid. |

I'll have to disagree with you and go with Scott on this one. I have spent considerable time tweaking my tcp/ip settings and about:config in Firefox to optimize thruput over evdo and 1XRTT.
I tried the setting for RWIN as you suggested and it cut my speeds on evdo down from a consistent average of 1.2Mbps to 500 - 600 kbps. (Signal strength averages 2 to 3 bars in my areas. I get these speeds even with 1-2 bars so I think my tweaks are working very well for my system. I don't use any compression software. Use an ARC freedom antenna on a 5220 P8a card with the Radiall/Larsen \adapter cable.l
I travel extensively weekly thruout the Southcoast thru Central Coast areas of California. I'm solid EVDO thru most of the 405/101 corridor in these regions. Have even been getting evdo up at Big Bear Lake the past 7 months.

Our research was conducted using a clean/fresh installation of Windows XP, Windows XP professional, and Windows 2000 pro.
If you have installed any software that messes with your settings, does any "optimization", "improves" your performance for any of your adapters, or are using a different flavor of Windows, your results may not match. Who knows what may have been tweeked? There is even one Win XP patch that tampered with this setting, and caused Microsoft to release another patch to undo the damage!
Controlled or "lab" results don't always match up with your unique instance of Windows. If it did, Microsoft wouldn't have to keep releasing service packs, lol!
Anyway, try it for a week or two. It's very easy to change it back! |

BroadbandOptimizer was not helping, on the contrary, performance went down from 800 to 950 kb to 500 - 650 kb
after I removed it, I went back up again...

| I got my verizon v620 card working with my mac pb g4 15 [osx 10.3.9] thanks to this site. However, my download speed is usually between 1.5 and .8 kilobytes/sec...no kidding. For the price I'm paying for access, it seems that it should be faster than that. As yet, there's no broadband access in Idaho - that i'm aware of. They advertise better than dialup speeds, but this isn't even close. Since this card isn't supposed to work with a mac, the verizon tech guys aren't much help....Anybody have any good advice for me? Thanks in advance....great forum!...gail |

Here's yer sign... I figured I'd say it before someone else does.
I've got a Sony VAIO and I'm trying to change the RWIN to 65536 using DRTCP as suggested, however the program doesn't "see" the V620. It does see the 56K modem, wifi card, lan card, etc... everything except the V620. I know there has to be a simple answer. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance. |

Just go ahead and make the RWIN change. XP will accept it regardless of which "modem" DRTCP is showing. When you reboot you'll find the tcp/ip stack configured as you changed it. _________________ Did you ever stop to think .... and then forgot to start again? |
