what's the best way to optimize your EVDO connection via Vista Ultimate ?

Right now I'm averaging 400-500kbps. I'm using a Franklin USB CDU-550 with Alltel Axcess.

On Tweaking Vista: From page 11 of this thread...

OK, where to begin Razz

mattengland contacted me via email about how to properly find your MTU and tweak your connection. First, a little bit about myself. I have been doing this for years and you can find a lot of my suggestions, recommendations and tutorials at my website DrTweak.com,
Broadbandnuts.com where I'm an Administrator (the makers of CableNut) and Speedguide.net where I have been posting for many years.

There are some misnomers, myths and truths in this thread about increasing your internet connection speed. The first thing to note is that if you are using Windows Vista don't waste your time attempting to tweak your connection, it can't be done. Vista has a new TCP/IP stack that is completely rewritten from Windows 200 & XP and Microsoft in their infinite wisdom have set it so you cannot change any of your TCP and AFD registry entries (the changes that affect your connection speed). Vista has a self tuning TCP/IP stack (as 2000 & XP do as well), but Vista's is more advanced, in my opinion not good enough...... but that's a whole other story. . .

It has been my experience that improving my signal strength by changing my location in a room or using an antenna and/or amplifier results in an increase in speed.

hmmm, so basically i'm stuck with what vista offers... I might try and install XP again. I'm just having too many problems with XP at the moment, but we'll see how that goes tonight.

THanks for the info. I had read every post, but obviously missed that one lol.

EDIT

I've been able to increase my signal by placing the modem in different spots. My speed has gone up a lot too. I've found a spot that it gets 100% lol, but I can't figure any way to "hang" it there lol. I basically have to hold it in the air roflmfao.

With the 100% signal, I get -74db.... grrrr. I have to figure out how to get this placed lol.

EDIT 2

Ok, I've hung it against my curtains with a safety pin LMFAO ! I do have the 100% signal now though (-73db). It seemed I got better download speeds with a 90% signal lol. Whatever. I think I'll install XP on another partition, or hard drive, and see what I can do from there.

We just got EVDO access last night through Alltel with the Franklin CDU 550.

I cant seem to get the DRTCP program to show my device. To try to get faster speed.

Speedtest.net shows we are getting 600k down and 100k up.

We came from 24k dialup so its super fast to what we are used to.

Is there a good place to start for tweaking Alltel w/WinXP Home?

Do any of the tools mentioned in this thread so far allow control over enabling support for RFC 1323? I ask because turning it "on" allows the host to advertise receive windows larger than 65535. It would give you more flexibility, but is there a real benefit. Also, what is generally the latency on these EVDO links. Is there any link performance results published anywhere we could use to tune the receive window?

First, I do not have time to read through this entire thread.

Does setting for EVDO optimization affect my laptop's LAN (wired) or WiFi connection speed to my home router?

I've searched my VISTA registry for TCP Receive Window Size and it is not found. Does this parameter exist somewhere in the VISTA registry or is it somewhere else? I looked at the DRTCP tool but it does not say it is compatible with VISTA so I hesitate to run it until I know it is OK to do so.

And, for the Venturi Compression, where do I look to see if it is enabled?

Thank you for your help.

I'm wondering if it's possible to optimize an EVDO signal for lower latency versus higher transfer rates? My speeds are good but I do a lot of online gaming and I would gladly sacrifice some speed in order to lower my pings a little bit.

Any thoughts?

latency is affected mostly by network beyond the cell tower you are connected to, and not between your device and the tower.

you can verify that by driving to the tower, sitting under it, and comparing speedtests against what you have at home/office/etc.

I tried this free tweak that's supposed to speed up my connection. Set the receive window to 65536 or whatever. Guess what? My download speeds were cut in half. As soon as I set it back where it was (blank). Everything returned to the speeds I was getting before. It also disabled my Rev-A connectability and that has not been resolved yet-I will probably have to re-install the software.

I just want to thank tech721. I tried playing with my settings in Dr. TCP but only managed to cripple my connection speed. As tech721 recommended, I downloaded and installed cFosSpeed v4.20.1389 and all I can say is wow. Now, I base my download speeds entirely off my usenet provider, seeing how that is my primary use for this mobile card. Before I installed cFosSpeed, I was downloading at an average of 110 KB with a peak of 131 KB. After I setup cFosSpeed my downloads almost instantly jumped to an average of 145 KB with a peak of 160 KB.

So I ran a tweaktest from DSL Reports, here is the results I had:

Receive Window (RWIN): 937488
Window Scaling: 4
Path MTU Discovery: ON
RFC1323 Window Scaling: ON
RFC1323 Time Stamping: OFF
Selective Acks: ON
MSS requested: 1456
TTL: unknown
TTL remaining: 110
TOS flags: none set

By the way, I use a Sierra Aircard 595U on the Sprint EVDO Rev. A Network with a signal strength of -81 dBM.
