I used to came on Xbox Live over satellite so the latency really is not as big as an issue as everyone makes it sound. Problem is my satellite went from steady sub 600ms pings to 1200+ pings. I am considering trying 1xRTT, but I am just worried if it will supply me with enough bandwith or not. The latency isn't really what I am worried about. Granted there are some games that have poor network code that simply do not work(Counterstrike, Farcry,Quake 4, etc) But then there is games like Call of Duty 3(best network code to date) that play beautifully. |

| I have sprint evdo and play world of warcraft and emeny territory with no problems. Ping times in wow are anywhere from 400-600 depending on how crowded it is I assume. Pings times for emeny territory run around 200-230 and to my surprise is very much playable, I've had no problems as of yet. |

My problem is EVDO is not available in my area. So the results with 1xRTT might not be quite as good as what you are getting. The main thing I am worried about is the upload speed. Does anybody know what kind of upload speed 1xRTT gets? |

| The upload will depend on location but generally I get 80-110k virtually everywhere I've tested 1xRTT. At times the upload actually is higher than the download for me on 1xRTT. I can't see 380-480 ms pings being all that playable w/ 1xRTT unless it is a turned base game but if you said it worked w/ 600ms pings then who am I to judge. |

Well the main game that I am going to play uses a system called Client Side Hit Detection. In other words my system will tell the server that I hit so and so instead of it telling the server where I shot and the server determining if I hit them.
Edit: Here is a list I made of the games that "were" playable and not playable on satellite. |

I play WoW on my EVDO and works great. Avg latency is 145ms which is pretty much what I get when I'm at home plugged into my roadrunner cable modem.
Specs:
Pantech PX-500 Aircard, no booster (usually 80-90 dB)
Dell 1.86MHz duo with 1GB RAM running Windows XP SP2
nVidia 256MB card (dunno chipset) |

My game these days is City of Heroes. I don't have ping numbers for it but overall I'm not noticing a difference in gameplay feel compared to the cable modem connection I had been using. I plan to test drive it for a couple more weeks but at this point it looks like I can safely ditch my cable modem in favor of EVDO and still have reliable gaming.
My setup is a merlin S720 card plugged into the linksys WRT54G3G-ST router and I get a strong rev A signal with no external antenna. The connection has been rock solid for hours at a time and I haven't had a drop yet at all.
I did run into one snag that I saw mentioned in another thread somewhere in these forums. When I tried to play the game on my laptop (dell inspiron 5100) with the S720 plugged directly into the laptop, the sprint connection manager would disconnect 30 seconds or so after I logged into the game. Rock solid and fine the rest of the time but as soon as I logged in--poof. Setting up a windows dialup networking connection and using that to connect was a successful workaround to this problem. |

Have you tried NDIS rather than a Windows dialup connection? I'd be curious to know if that solves your disconnect issues with the card plugged directly into the laptop.

| Yes, I did try NDIS and I still got dropped when trying to play the game while connected through sprint connection manager. |

Helo,
Does anyone has ever experienced a difficulty in connecting to online game(RPG especially). This happens at a certain time everyday, which is around 8 pm until 12 midnight or something, beyond that it's quite normal(with speedy download and ping around 60-80 to game servers with not much of RTO of course). But once I got connected it's like normal hours.
What might be the problem? Is it because of high traffic ? NAT problem? Anyone got a clue? Because it seems the ISP provider does not have a slight idea. I know it is not because of the games I play locally, I have tested an international game, also does not work.
Thanks before, oh and, EVDO sucks for online gaming hehe especially in FPS gaming. For RPG it's quite fair with a little bit of delay. Stay away from wireless if you focus on gaming. |

| I've been playing CoD4 daily on a local LA server and it's not too bad. It will sometimes display laggy behavior though....like yesterday I was in a match and I was trying to snipe a guy hiding in the bushes. I crosshair was RIGHT on him and I fired several shots and he still didn't die! This happens a lot with sniper rifle weapons but for everything it's OK. Can't wait to see how good or bad the netcode is in MW2. |
