|
|
I'm seriously considering jumping on the bandwagon and getting an EVDO card + service. I'm wondering if anyone who's bought the advertised tweaks to get max. bandwidth, (i.e. 2Mbps), can tell me if it's worth the extra $$$. What do you get over the shared info / tweaks provided on this forum? As far as I can tell, you pay extra for non-Verizon tech support, in one case, and a PDF of tips in another. Any thoughts?
thanks

I'm holding off on those tips, They don't state they do anything for the new V620 card.
I hear they do help, very surpirsed there is nothing in the newsgroups about this. |

I can't vouch for the hyper-tweak document but I'd jump on a 5220 or the Novatel card. EVDO at its 'native' level of performance is very impressive, far better than anything I've used previously, and better than I anticipated. If you buy the pdf document, please post your results.

EVDO is only a T1 into the tower. If someone tells you you're going to get 2 megs out of a 1.5 meg pipe, it just ain't going to happen. I think actual EVDO in the Dallas area ranges from 400kb to 900kb on average which is great for sitting at a stop light.
When Rev A is released later this year at 3megs down, then we can hold our heads up with the cable/dsl boys and *still* be sitting at a stop light. |

There has been some discussion in the verizon group and a linux one. You know, a EVDO group would be nice. I got to look in to ho to start one. |

here's what i see on vzw's site for the 5220:
# Typical download speeds of 300-500 kbps with bursts up to 2 Mbps
# Qualcomm MSM5500, data speeds up to 2 Mbps
fact or fiction? also, here's a pay-evdo site that touts 2Mb:
evdo-coverage.com (ADMIN:dishonest evdo vendor)
seems too good to be true.
btw, i'm in Southern CA...

Did you check out the site for the guy selling 2000K speed. First of all it is impossible to get that much. I read an article about how the benchmarks are misleading and inaccurate.
Also, they sell the evdo antenna for $279 (others $79). They sell a EVDO router for $1400 (others $700). It just doesn't "feel" right over there. |

This place is definitely more information centric than a profit center. |

seems too good to be true. | I talked to ol' Robert Kim at that site and he swore up-n-down that it would work with 1xRTT as well. I finally convinced him to send me the notes and if it did work, I'd send him a check. I tried it, it did nothing so I let him know about it and he apologized all over himself. After that, the salesman that he is, asked me if I needed an external antenna. I already had a full strength signal so I declined.
The conclusion that I came to is that if you are in a fringe area, you need a way to stop the 5220 card from jumping between 1xRTT and EVDO. You can use the the debug trick to lock the card or better yet, get an antenna or booster amp if necessary to bring in the signal. |
