[SEE UPDATE AT END OF THIS POST]

Both Rev-A ExpressCards, Sprint's Merlin EX720 ExpressCard and Verizon's V740 work in the Kyocera KR1 when used with the Novatel ExpressCard Adapter (which converts the ExpressCard to a PCMCIA card slot).

Our testing with both ExpressCards in the KR1 while using the adapter, show the same performance issues that the U720/USB720 currently experience.

The loss of speed comes from the fact that Kyocera has not yet upgraded the KR1's firmware to full support these new ExpressCards or USB Modems.

We are certain that Kyocera will consider a firmware upgrade to support these devices in the future, but have no official word we can pass along.

UPDATE: Kyocera has officially announced and released their latest firmware update for the KR1, and the Sprint EX720 or the Verizon V740 are NOT supported. In fact, they no longer work AT ALL, not even with speed issues.

I bought one KR1 from eBay at $20 plus $12 shipping with older firmware 1.006 or 1.007 (I forgot to write it down). It works great with my Sprint EX720.

My KR1 is now no longer works with EX720 after I upgraded firmware to 1011.

I am very regret to upgrade firmware.

the KR1 was a good choice for a looong time.
but now that 3g routers like http://3gstore.com/CTR500 and http://3gstore.com/MBR1000 that have native expresscard slots are around... you really should upgrade.

the cradlepoint's are so much better at maintaining a connection, too.
