|
|
Perhaps I can shed some light on what this "new bug" is. Back in Feb, when I purchased this router, I found that the access restrictions settings did not work. I have been calling support on the issue once every month or two since then. I finally was able to "talk" with someone who would acknowlege the issue. Here is the transcript of our email discussion (in reverse order, of course):
Discussion Thread
Response (Gordon Green) 10/04/2007 07:39 AM
Good morning Mrs Christensen,
The engineers are the ones who are responsible for writing the codes for the firmware. No customers are allowed to contact the engineers directly and we do not give out there numbers. I do not have an ETA for when the firmware will be release, that is all up to the engineers, in regards to when they can get to the issue at hand and depends on the priority of the matter. I apologize for the inconvenience this may be causing you.
Customer (Kathie Christensen) 10/04/2007 07:03 AM
Can you please help me find the approximate release time for this update. I have contacted Sprint several times and they are absolutely clueless about it. Do you have a contact number for the department that reviews the firmware?
Response (Gordon Green) 09/13/2007 08:19 AM
Good morning Mrs Christensen,
I received an update from the engineers in regards to the firmware and they are waiting on Sprint to test and clear the firmware for release for there customers. So there is a firmware addressing the issue, that's ready to be release but do to contract agreement with Sprint they have to clear the firmware and make sure the firmware works with there current network. I will keep you updated. Thanks for your time in advance.
Customer (Kathie Christensen) 09/12/2007 08:14 AM
Thanks very much. I would appreciate that.
Response (Gordon Green) 09/12/2007 07:33 AM
Good morning Mrs Christensen,
I apologize for the issue you are still having with the access rules. When I went into the lab and setup the access rules the way I explained it to you, it work for me but I had another customer who came across the same issue as you and they could not get it to work as well.
So I think it will be best for you to wait for the firmware that will address your issue. I have no ETA from the engineers when the firmware will be available. As I mention to you before, the issue you reported didn't go to engineers until I reported to them the same day I first spoke with you.
I will give the engineers a call and see if I can find out any information on the firmware fix and attempt to get an ETA. I apologize for inconvenience.
Customer (Kathie Christensen) 09/11/2007 08:13 PM
Gordon,
The problem with setting up the allow rule with specific IPs is that there is only space for six IP addresses. I have 8 computers on my network.
For test purposes, however, I have set up my allow and deny rules as you said to do and, still, the denied IPs immediately lose access to the internet when the deny rule is enabled, regardless of the time range set. And I do have fixed IP addresses set on the computers.
I have tried to send you screen shots of my settings but apparently your email will not accept images. Is there another address I can send them to?
Kathie
Response (Gordon Green) 08/28/2007 07:46 AM
Good morning Mrs. Christensen,
If you setup your allow rule first and then setup your deny rule for all, and then someone was to switch there static IP address to something different then what was enter in the allow rule, that person will not be able to access the internet, due to the deny all rule. I was just offering you a work around for your issue.
The issue that you reported was submitted to the engineers but I do not have a ETA on when a firmware will be develop to address your issue. Once the firmware is available, I will contact you with the firmware that will be addressing your issue. I apologize for the delay and frustration this issue has cause.
Customer (Kathie Christensen) 08/27/2007 01:58 PM
The reason this is not acceptable is that the person whose access I'm trying to restrict can easily change their IP address to overcome the restriction. I need to be able to filter on MAC addresses.
Response (Gordon Green) 08/27/2007 08:17 AM
I called the customer back and explained to her that her issue was not reported to the engineers as she was set to believe but I have now sent her issue to the engineers as a PKI. Victor M had already tested this scenario out and was aware of the issue.
The issue has been sent to engineers for a fix but Victor M also came up with a work around for now, until the firmware fix is available. The customer reference that she was not excited about using the work around scenario but she will attempt to try it.
The customer initially called in just to see what the ETA was for her issue she reported 8 months ago. This case will be closed. The customer reference she will just check the Linksys website for the new firmware that should address her issue. I explained to the customer if I get alert of the firmware being ready for her issue, I will contact her via email or phone.
I have really given up hope of this fix every happening.

Here's to hoping that it really is not the 6 mos Jim mentions in his thread. _________________ --Larry |

just for sh*ts and giggles, i chatted with linksys a few mins ago and was told the same thing, which basically is, they know about it and are working on it.
Rique H. (22312): Yes. As I've checked, our Product Engineers are already aware of this problem and are currently on the process of creating an updated firmware that will resolve this issue. What we can do right now is to wait for the updated firmware which should be available at www.linksys.com/download once it is done.
Rique H. (22312): Unfortunately, we don't have an estimated time for its release but we were advise to wait for further notice with regard to this issue. |

I finally got a response from my connection and this is what he just emailed me:
A new build was submitted to sprint they have yet to approve or decline it I can't release it till sprint approves it.
So much for that Christmas wish I asked for..Santa has some explaining to do..

Thanks for the update, Jim; even if it is not the best of news. On the bright side, sounds like they did find a fix for whatever bug was ailing them. _________________ --Larry |

I posted a message on Linksys message forums about his issue asking that the special firmware be made available to all users.
Here is my speed test:
1025 down, 315 up.
I would have posted the linke, but something in the forum is keeping me from postin www addresses. Guess its because I'm new, even thought I have been a member for over 2 years. |

Hello All,
I've been having a strange VPN problem with my WRT54G3G-ST and have been going back and forth with 2nd level support at Linksys and ofcourse they've been no help. I work for IBM and we have a special phone number and PIN number that gets us the top of the line support so I called it. That "special" support desk forwarded me straight to an engineer. Yes, and actual Linksys engineer! How about that. While I had him I asked about this upload issue and he told me that they do have a solution to it and that the firmware has been sent to the Sprint engineers for their approval. He said that they cannot release this firmware to anyone until Sprint approves it. He also said that Sprint was already past due on their reponse to Linksys regarding this firmware, so there it is. There is a fix and Sprint is holding onto it. |

I'm curious, what problems have you been having with your vpn? I've been having a problem with mine for the last week or so. Its been working real good until early last week. It hangs and disconnects and I loose my telnet sessions. But it's been working good for the last year, but the past week, I've been having issues and I'm at a loss as to what is going on.

Jim, That sounds very familiar. What happens with me is when I connect with my VPN, I can access both the intranet and internet. Then about 30 minutes later I can no longer access the internet but still can access the intranet. When this happens, ALL computers on the router cannot access the internet. The only fix is for me to reboot the router. This started happening to me in early December and it happens daily. Linksys said that this was a new one for them, I was told that by both the engineer and level 2 support. Maybe you should call Linksys on this one.
Good luck and let me know what you find out.

Mine is almost the opposite. My vpn dies, but in internet works just fine. My home pc works just fine, it's just my work laptop that does this. I briefly tried yesterday, of not using the wireless part and use a wired connection. I tried it briefly and it appeared to work ok, so I'm not sure if it's specific to the wireless part or not. I'll keep tinkering and if I figure anything else I'll post it.
Thanks
Jim |
