PostPosted: Fri Feb 09, 2007 6:17 pm    Post subject: Novatel Releases Mac Drivers for U720 S720 EX720

Today, Sprint released drivers for the following Mobile Broadband Devices:

- Merlin S720 PC Card
- Novatel Ovation U720 USB Modem
- Merlin EX720 (Rev A ExpressCard)

We are conducting tests and benchmarks and will be reporting additional information after we are done with our tests.

Please note, these are drivers that are similar to the ones released by EVDOforums user "Mac.Intosh", BUT these are from Novatel, the manufacturer of the above cards.

Novatel Ovation U720 USB720 Rev A and Mac OS X Compatibility

This is a good first step for Sprint devices, BUT it will still frustrate many Mac Users, since the following is missing:

- No graphical interface, so you don't see:
- signal strength
- network used (1x vs Rev 0 vs Rev A, no way to easily tell)
- no way to see firmware version of PRL version
- no way to update firmware or PRL
- AND no way to do activation (needed to make card work OR when changes are made to your account and you need to re-provision your card).
- No direct support from Sprint for Mac Users.

Now the good news

We will be supporting these drivers by doing the following:

- When ordering a U720, S720, EX720 from us, if you select 'Mac-Preactivate" on the order form, we will:
- include a CD with the latest drivers and directions
- preactivate your U720, S720, EX720
- upgrade your firmware
- download the latest PRL
- Provide phone/email support to help those needing installation help

Our technical staff (and sales staff) can help and we have been helping Mac Users use EVDO cards for the last 2 years.

We do NOT charge extra for the above services, they are included free, when you purchase a card with activation from us. The only charge, is one extra shipping charge (Sprint ships the card to us vs. you, we do all the above, drop in a CD and then send to you via FedEx).

Additional tests are being performed.

The new drivers from Sprint/Novatel obviously don't get along with the previous drivers posted by Mac.Intosh. Both attempt to handshake with the U720 when it is inserted and the net result is your U720 won't work. Delete/install only one version.

That said, the Novatel appears to perform no better or no worse with regard to latency or throughput speed. Maybe a little better, but I'm splitting hairs and its still too early to tell.

BUT, the better news is that the "official" Sprint/Novatel driver appears to allow sleep/wake and in some cases booting/restarting with the U720 inserted. That is welcome news.

I've tested a number of older Macs, and the U720 works after booting/restarting/sleeping/waking.

Intel-based Macs appear to only detect the U720 after sleeping/waking, whereas booting/restarting returns the no device detected error, requiring the U720 to be removed and re-inserted.

So far this is better than before.

Now if Sprint could just manage to provide TRUE Mac support like (Verizon has) in the form of a full-featured Sprint PCS Connection Manager for Mac, then we'd really have something to get excited about.

Sorry, the Sprint download site was down last night so I couldn't find the drivers on their sites. I am not sure if it is posted elsewhere, but here is the link if you need the mac driver (and others).
http://www.sprint.com/downloads and then select the Mac OS.

Awesome! Thanks Sprint, for a step in the right direction. Let's just hope, and keep our fingers crossed, that they are in the works with a mac version of the connection manager software.

I know that it might take a little time to customize the software for sprint to their liking, but don't let us down. Make us even happier to be a sprint satisfied customer by taking care of us and our requests. You probably will get some verizon converts too in the process.

I've been a Sprint customer for 9.5 years now, so far so good. No complaints yet.

One thing I've noticed with the sprint drivers is that I must establish a port in network settings for each of my USB ports on my backbook pro.

I initially set up my U720 using the USB port on the right side of my Mac Book Pro, then moved my machine to my car where I have my car's desk set up to receive the device on the Left side via a USB extension cable. When I did this my machine didn't recognize the device until I went thru the procedure of opening network prefrences and adding another Novatel port to my configuration.

I've tested this by removing the ports & drivers and re-installing. This was not an issue with Mac.intosh's drivers that I was using previously.

PostPosted: Tue Feb 13, 2007 9:58 am    Post subject: compatibility with the old hack

I purchased my S720 back in the fall from boosterantenna.com.
I then used the hack that evdoinfo sent along.

* How do the new drivers from sprint work with the old hack. In other words, do I need to undo it?

* Should I find a PC and upgrade the firmware? It has never been updated since purchased.

Thanks!

P.S. I never used the Mac.Intosh drivers

Yes, you'll want to undue the hack before you proceed further.

Since you're a customer, look for an e-mail from our support team on the subject.

Where is a copy of the drivers that is NOT Broken?

Sprint's site says the download is supposed to be 2mb, but no matter what browser I have tried, it is actually only 473kb. I have used IE 7, Safari, Camino, FireFox.

Go to your Sprint account page, the one that lists your phone etc., and there is a clickable there to take you to the downloads. Or use the url posted herein several times. It's easier to remember to go to your account page at Sprint.

The 473 file zipped and will expand to the 2 mb file. Double click it. If nothing happens download Stuffit Expander and try again.

Sorry, jackrodgers, but I that was the first thing I suspected. No change no matter how many times I download it or what program I use to open the zip archive. Also all other files that I have tried to download (by selecting different OS' as well as devices) are the sizes that they are listed as on the Sprint website.

Also, for what it is worth, I do not allow any of my browsers to automatically open downloaded files. So I know it is not a problem with that either.

It would appear that the download has been changed from the Novatel drivers to pdf files for instructions, at least for Safari.
