|
|
| Quote: | SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Novatel Wireless, Inc. (Nasdaq:NVTL - News), a leading provider of wireless broadband access solutions, today announced the commercial availability of the Novatel Wireless Rev. A ExpressCard(TM) for the Sprint Power Vision Network. This product offers A-GPS location-based capability and higher data speeds, providing Sprint users with increased mobility and productivity while maintaining contact with clients and colleagues.
With the Merlin(TM) EX720 ExpressCard, Sprint customers in areas of EV-DO Rev. A coverage can achieve a mobile DSL-like experience. When used in markets with the technology upgrade the Merlin EX720 provides average upload speeds of 350-500 Kbps (compared with 50-70 Kbps of current EV-DO networks) and average download speeds of 600 Kbps-1.4 Mbps (from 400-700 Kbps).
Through the location-based software capability, the users will be able to find nearby locations, such as restaurants, gas stations, banks etc., without having to input their current location. This is achieved with software that allows the ExpressCard to instinctively get a GPS reading. An automatically launched web browser, with a mapping software solution indicates the location of the user and provides results from the search query.
"Being an industry leader with another commercially available EV-DO Rev. A ExpressCard underscores our commitment to delivering innovative, high-quality wireless products that enhance our customers' time to market advantage," said Rob Hadley, senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing for Novatel Wireless. "With the Merlin EX720, Sprint customers can now utilize the power of the first location-based services available on their EV-DO Rev. A network and we are pleased to work with Sprint in delivering this innovative solution to the market. This also begins our longer term growth initiatives of incorporating value-added applications into our products, and then extending our platforms and services into new end-to-end offerings."
The Merlin EX720 ExpressCard supports different operating systems and easily functions with Windows® (XP, 2000, Vista) and Mac® (10.4 or higher). This product is a smaller and lighter form factor than a traditional PCMCIA card and is designed for use in mobile computing notebooks that support the ExpressCard 34 and/or 54 interface.
The intuitive user interface via the Sprint Connection Manager is simple to install and allows for easy navigation through the card's cast features. Finally, the advanced dual band diversity antenna system design incorporates a flip-up antenna, maximizing data speed performance and allowing for stronger network signal reception.
The Novatel Wireless Merlin EX720 Rev. A ExpressCard will be available by late February in Sprint sales channels as the Merlin EX720 ExpressCard, a Sprint labeled and provisioned product.

The key statement everyone should note is:

A quick check of the Sprint site proves the device is not yet available.
Something else to keep in mind is that this is a Novatel press release... so it is Novatel that says the card will be Mac-compatible. However, at this point in time we have not seen a Mac OSX Sprint Connection Manager. |

The card is Mac compatible but the carrier may or may not provide suitable drivers for its use. Which means even though it will work in a Mac, you may not be able to use it with a specific carrier.
It would seem that Verizon provides Mac drivers but Sprint does not which means that a compatible card cannot be used on Sprint unless you find a suitable driver for it by Apple or a third party.
Just like there is 'Unlimited Access' there is 'Mac Compatible'.
Actually these cards should work in any computer with any OS that has a proper port form them. IF you can find a suitable driver or write one of your own which isn't too difficult if you have the know how. |

Poor argument.
If a carrier advertises as being Mac compatible, the carrier is the one that either needs to provide drivers OR rely on the manufacturer of the OS (Apple) to release drivers. Saying, it is "Mac Compatible", and not having a solution except to find a 3rd party or write your own, just doesn't fly. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

I totally agree. If I was selling a car part and said it was compatible with a specific model, then I either need to make sure it does work, or provide a way for it to work. Otherwise, it is just FALSE ADVERTISEMENT. Obviously, Sprint can to this conclusion because it no longer says Mac compatible.

| Does anyone know yet whether the EX720 will work with the Novatel PC Card to Express Card adapter in older PowerBooks and the KR1? |

it should, but we won't know for sure until we get an EX720 in and test it. |

Not wishing to PO the host, I would point out that my comments were aimed at Novatel's claim of Mac compatibility, not Sprint's. (I have enjoyed returning with a working C120 years ago after being told it would not work on a Mac by Sprint Guy.)
Novatel claimed Mac compatibility which is obviously true since it is designed to work in an Express Card and Mac's have express card slots.
My point is that compatible doesn't mean it does work, just that it could. And if someone produces the proper drivers.
And why I ask should an OS have to produce drivers? Could there not be some form of connector in the cards that would function with the same clarity and ease of use of an AC power cord? |
