|
|
I am thinking about using my EVDO service as my only internet service and ditching dial up (DSL/Cable not availiable).
If I do this and share with the Desktop in the house is the connection always on? How would one log on to the Desktop with the EVDO card in the router?
Does the desktop have the Sprint Connection Software installed and that is how the desktop user connects?
Sorry if these questions are dumb. |

Not a dumb question at all.
Anytime a router is used, there is no reason to load/run the Sprint PCS Connection Manager software (likewise the Verizon VZAccess Manager 'VZAM' app for VZW customers).
The software can only communicate with PC Cards/ExpressCards or USB modems when those devices are connected directly to the computer's PC Card/ExpressCard/USB port.
When connecting over Wi-Fi wireless or Ethernet cable to a router, the software has no function (save for VZW's VZAM, which will attempt to be a Wi-Fi manager if you do not change the default installation when first installed -we recommend that you don't let VZAM 'manage' your Wi-Fi).
It IS good to have the software available for maintenance of your device (or when setting up an antenna) as long as your computer has a port that allows the device to connect directly. |

You didn't say which OS you are using so I will mention how the Mac OS works.
You can select Open Internect Connect... under the phone icon or the wifi icon on the menu bar.
You will see a row of named icons across the top of the Internet Connect window and you click on one. The various options now appear and if you have everything set up, you simply click on Connect or Disconnect and there you are.
This method lets you select between your EVDO modem, phone modem, Airport, VPN, BLuetooth, etc. Your connection instantly switches to match your choice when you click connect.
Windows requires a bit more effort but the results are the same. |

Yes for the most part, it is an always-on connection.
The EVDO card connection will enter into a dormant mode, and then when data is requested it should come out. Occasionally it may get stuck in dormant mode (this happens even when using EVDO cards in notebooks).
Likewise, there has been some discussion about how often the carrier may reset the connection (referred to as "lease time"). Typically, routers will reconnect automatically if the connection is lost or dropped. |
