further study found avg ping to be 450ms, but downloads from 120kbs-600kps. Still not the best for gaming (. That's up to 4x faster than the 144 verizon claims anyway. Surfing is a hell of alot faster thou)

Hey peallen42,

Glad it is working for you (really). You may want to read this thread to see if this is what is being used.

Generally speaking, if you have a 10mb zip filed to move down to your computer over EVDO, you still have 10mb to move and compression won't help much (and in some cases, compressing a zip or jpg can actually make the file larger).

here is what he wrote, without completely giving away his secret.

Technical Notes:
The Venturi System alone, that you correctly installed, Did 2 things.

a. it installed an ISP Level Compression System.
What this means is that between the internet and your computer, Major Compression has already happened at Verizonís Server. So the amount of data being transmitted has been greatly compacted before ever reaching your computer. Venturi then decompresses your data with 0 Loss Ė Unless you specify that picture quality loss is acceptable. Then, before displaying your webpage or email, Your data is instantly decompressed.

b. it installed a rapid proxy.
This means that instead of the typical user experience where he must go from his computer to an EVDO Antenna Tower to a Verizon Switch to Verizonís Gateway to Verizonís Backbone to a SuperComputing Center To another SuperComputer Center, to a different ISP to a Website and back again, Verizon holds a carbon copy of the entire internet (close to) within Verizonís Secure Walls. So, You donít have to make all those hops and connections. It greatly shortens your distance to your content. Of course, this means that you may NOT be getting real time content as it is ccíd. but for most applications, this is perfectly acceptable. For VPN, it is NOT. Turn Venturi OFF for VPN Applications.

Click on the URL above to read about benchmarking, there is a lot of useful information there.

When you use Venturi and do a benchmark test. A portion of the benchmarking happens between the test server and the proxy servers (that are on high speed internet connections), this is why you can get a result that is physically impossible (e.g. 1xRTT speeds max out at 144K, you can get 500K benchmarks on 1xRTT using Venturi). Sure, the benchmarks are impressive, but that is just looks. If you have a 10mb zip file, it can actually take longer going through Venturi. Then BIGGEST reason to use Venturi, if you are moving straight text files (e.g. 10mb text file), the Venturi compression can actually compress that and speed things up considerably.

Oh yeah, one more slightly important thing. Venturi is free (at least it is when you buy a Verizon Data card). It is free to download updates as well.

Wow - Is this VERIZON EVDO or is this Supernatural EVDO? Verizon maintains a Carbon Copy of the entire Internet - isnt that fun. So if something happens to the Internet no worries....Verizon's Carbon copy can be used. And no one has to worry that their personal data is lying in that Carbon copy - good good.

Sometimes I feel these guys who get conned by the con-sites deserve to get conned. Imagine telling others with a straight face that "verizon maintains a copy of the entire Internet"......

Oh and BTW - VERIZON EVDO rocks Wink

Did you know about his weblog? His title (top blue bar of the browser) leads with, "EVDO Facts..."

http:// evdo-coverage . blogspot.com

Admin: I changed the link so it is not a link (just remove the spaces). Since our forums are now being indexed (heavily) by all the search engines, I do not want to provide a real link so that it helps that site.

Kind of off topic to VERIZON EVDO but the admin was talking of search engines indexing the site - now I have seen that one search engine (Yahoo) seems not to have its results updated no matter what - any idea of the search engines take a few days or months to update their results? Specifically EVDO VERIZON or VERIZON EVDO search leads to those crappy con sites coming on top instead of those websites containing true information..... Mad

Actually, Yahoo and MSN update pretty fast (this site is #4 at Yahoo when you type in Verizon EVDO, #2 when you type in EVDO). If you notice, we are paying in the sponsored results for our free EVDOinfo.com web site. If you enter EVDO in MSN, we are #1, #2, #3, #5, #6, #Cool. Google is the one we need work on. We were in the top 10 up until last month. Google did something called the "Bourbon Update", and MANY sites dropped off. Many people are still tying to figure out why. We are on the 2nd page of Google and pay for Sponsored links there. We are starting to get a ton of traffic on EVDOinfo.com & EVDOforums.com (that is due to the higher up placement in Yahoo - we have always been high in MSN) and a lot of favorable links in EVDO articles in the NY Times and LA Times.

Something that is even more important is happening, it is called word of mouth. Let your fellow associates/friends/relatives/etc, know that EVDOinfo.com is a great resource for EVDO information and EVDOforums.com is the best (only) EVDO community group.

Sorry, I don't frequent these forums too often, and I just found this thread. I know a few people that were taken by this guy last year. Luckily, I wasn't, but I am glad that these forums are around to help those on the bleeding edge not too bleed too much.

I have read this thread with interest and started doing some Googling of this guy. I have found a new area that Robert Kim is focusing on these days:

http://zazzah-travel-shipping.blogspot.com/
http://zazzah.com/

Does this mean that he is leaving EVDO and moving on to other areas? Probably not.

Here here goes again....

Robert Kim is now stealing our pages and claiming they are his.

We created the following page on April 14, 2005, which gave Mac users directions to use the Novatel V620:

PowerBook Mac OS X Directions To Use Novatel V620

We noticed the following page on Robert Kim's Web site, WHICH IS AN EXACT COPY OF OUR PAGE.

There is one strange anomaly in my directions that are exactly copied in Bobs. Actually there are two.

Here is the kicker. He entered a date of August 2, 2004 to fool people to think that he was the first to create these Novatel V620 directions. There is only ONE problem, the Novatel V620 was announced middle January 2005 and was generally available in February 2005. So, the above directions were created 5 months before the V620 was introduced?

C'mon Bob, please stop stealing content from our site and posting it as yours (especially when we get some huge EVDO news scoops over the next few months - I guess we will have to watermark our exclusives).

Found this interesting discussion on a Super Charged i730:

Quote:
In other words, this bucket of clowns has marked up the cost of this phone $756 ($1475-$719) to give you, the unsuspecting mark in this scam, ~$100 worth of upgrades

Read the complete thread here:

pdaPhoneHome: A Super Charged i730? Can this be for real?

What is the going price for a 1GB SD Card? Froogle shows around $50 - $100.

However, the guy over at the other web site (they keep changing their URL, now it is unplug and play.com is selling a 1GB SD card for $585. Here is what you get:

Quote:
Instead of sending us your pda/ppc/phone, we just send you the new 1gb "DROP-n-ROLL" chip directly. In about 30 minutes, this chip will rebuild your handheld and speed up web browsing, bandwidth, cpu clock speed, and increase battery life.

I wonder how many people will be suckered into this new SuperCharged option Sad
