|

Just noticed that it's now available from the SmithMicro website, so I downloaded it to see what was new.
Here is the good news:
Sees my Sprint U720 as a Verizon USB720
Here is the bad news:
States that my U720 is not activated. And all attempts to activate it fail (small surprise, only my Razr V3m has EVDO access right now, plus the USB720 is not officially out yet )
Looks like Verizon definitely learned from the leaked VZAccess 3.1.2 incident. On the other hand, I know that VZA 3.1 supports my U720, so I might just go back to that version. |

|

I downloaded and installed VZAM v3.1.3 for my VZW V640. Yet there's a little hint of what's lurking (note red oval):
VZAccess Manager v3.1.3 has the updated interface and would now appear to correctly poll/display signal level for the Sprint Ovation U720 where I believe the v3.1.2 VZAM did not. The Connect WWAN button is now on the lower-right.
Signal appears to poll accurately, and what you see is what you get: a bona fide Rev A interface for the Mac! (Helloooooo SPRINT.... Sprint.... sprint.... just NOD if you can HEAR ME NOW??)
BTW, you don't have to activate an already working/activated USB720. Part of the default installation procedure for VZAM is to do a PRL update at the end of the install/device detection process.
I find it a little funny that while the Read Me page during install hints of the 'USB modem', the device detection phase forgets it completely ("dernit.. i guess this version won't detect my USB720 afterall" -guess again!):
BIG WARNING to those of you with Sprint U720's: you may want to be careful inserting a newly purchased U720 into a system running VZAM v3.1.3, since the Sprint Connection Manager that runs on Windows and that is used to provision/setup the U720 is a different animal than the VZAM 3.1.3 which is intended for Verizon's USB720 (with Verizon's firmware, no doubt). I really don't want to read about anyone killing their new toy.
The About Window says it all:

Scott, did you actually try connecting with the Novatel U720 with the VZAccess 3.1.2?
I did and got this: (on an activated U720 device).
It prevents me from using the Sprint Novatel U720 with Verizon VZAccess software. Looks like Verizon isn't giving Sprint a free ride. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

I got that as well for my Sprint Novatel U720 with 3.1.3. Attempts to activate the card all fail. Sorry Scott, but like I said, it looks like Verizon learned their lesson. |

Can you provide a link? I checked smithmicro's website, but I can't find the downloads for VZAccess manager anywhere (it must be hidden?). Using the "check for updates" inside VZAccess manager says I'm up to date, which clearly is NOT correct (I'm using 2.0 for OS X).

Yep. It connected fine. I never allowed the update request to run at the end of the device detection phase. Clicked Connect WWAN and it connected without issue. Never saw the dialog window everyone else is seeing. Dunno why. |

I never got an update request at the end of the device detection phase, EXCEPT when I had Mac.Intosh's novatel drivers installed prior to installing VZAccess 3.1.3.
That is probably why you can use your u720 successfully. I was able to also. but once I removed the novatel720 kext and relied on verizon's own driver, then I started to have trouble. |

almost got the WWAN Menu Extra working with my U720!
(sorry, but I'm not very good with trying to embed images in posts, so here is just a link to my photoalbum on .mac.)

So far, I've managed to get it to stay stable. and acknowledge my usb modem. next step is to actually get it to run |

I've installed VZAM 3.1.3 a number of different ways, as an 'upgrade' with prior versions present, and both with and without the Mac.Intosh drivers present. In my case it made no difference: U720 connects without issue and I never receive the activation page.
In the cases where the Mac.Intosh driver is present, monitoring the active extension reveals that the U720 has loaded the new driver that VZAM 3.1.3 installs, not the prior existing driver.
Perhaps I have a "magic" U720. :] |

Joel, to keep EVDOforums easier for people to find posts - we like to keep posts on topic. Your posts are of interest, but lets keep this thread on using VZAccess Manager vs. hacking your plists (thanks!). _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Question....
I am expecting my Verizon v740 card tomorrow.
Not sure what to do here.
Do I install VZACCESS MANAGER or do I install Apple's
WWAN software or BOTH?
I have not yet updated to OSX 10.4.9 so I may not have
issues now....but at some point I am going to have to update.
Would very much appreciate advice on how to best install
the software. |

Michael,
Greatly appreciate that link.
Just have to put some serious thought as to
whether it is better not to update the software
and use the VZACCESS card
-OR-
To upgrade the software (which I'll have to do
at some point anyway) and use Apple's WWAN
menu.
Just don't know the advantages or disadvantages
of either method. |
