When using my U 720 modem in a MacBook & G4OS X Tiger, after an hour of use the modem is barely discernably warm. The same U720 modem in a desktop G4 PowerMac will become disturbingly HOT after just 30 minutes of use. this amount of heat would seem to be detrimental to the longevity of the modem components. This has been observed several times and on the same day at the same location. Only difference in location is the PowerMac is located in my studio which is on the second floor loft of our home and this loft is directly beneath a metal roof and the MacBook is downstairs. Anyone else make this observation. What might be the cause?

no, i don't have any theories yet. but i am curious... when used in the desktop mac, is the u720 plugged directly into a usb port? or at the end of an extender cable.
if not on a cable, how about trying it on a cable, and positioning the u720 as far away from the desktop mac as possible... just as a test. |

I have made the connection between the U720 and the USB port in the rear of the Mac by using a USB cable approx 36" in length and placed the modem as far away from the PowerMac as possible (about 36")and it becomes disturbingly HOT. |

| You might check the voltage available on the USB connector and make sure it isn't too high. |

Whose drivers are you using?
Is the port USB or USB 2.0?
What are you doing when the modem heats up, such as continuous downloads or streaming video, etc.?
What is your room temperature. My MacBook Pro will heat up if the temperature goes over 72 degrees with temperature and usage a factor as to how much it heats up. |

I suppose that I could find just how to get a voltage reading of the USB port but I think it rather remote as I have not had other USB devices overheat when connected to the same port. |

I am using the excellent driver written by MacIntosh (thanks Mac)
The port is a USB.
I am surfing, downloading a page at time, no file sending or streamingthe room temperature is a comfortable 74 deg. I have thought about this and wonder if rhe fact that I am in a remote fringe edge of the Sprint EVDO area and that some how when I am connected on a computer in that upstairs loft it seems that t he signal is weaker and info transfer slower. Could that be the explanation. Just an uneducated guess. Think a booster antenna might help? Both with signal and overheating? |

| either the powermac is pushing too much current into the device over USB (doubtful), or the metal roof overhead makes the device work harder to transmit, which greatly increases heat. </guess> |

I agree, after trying several different USB cables (no change in performance) also with and without booster antenna (again no change) I then carried the PowerBook to the loft location of the PowerMac desktop computer and lo, thePowerBookU 720 exhibited the same poor performance including "overheating"? of the U 720 modem. So it appears that using the U 720 in conjunction with close proximity to metal roof or walls is not recommended. |
