Hey all, first time poster long time reader.
Does anyone have an ideas on how I can rig my U720 Modem to work with a WIFI phone? Clearly, Sprint does not have any method for this but I bet some smart users might figure out a way rig this up.

In other words, know of any phones we can rig up so that they'll accept a USB connections?

Wouldn't it be so great to just pay for your Sprint Broadband account ($59.99) and use it for both internet and phone? You could cancel your Sprint cell phone plan and save a ton of money.

Thanks

Ok, so far I'm just talking with myself but I've found another option. We could use our U720's for internet and phone service (thus being able to cancel that sprint phone account and save some money) if we found a Skype phone that had a USB port.

Here's the Skype phones I've seen:
http://us.accessories.skype.com/direct/skypeusa/accessoriesList.jsp?acctype=8

At first I thought the Skype NETGEAR WiFi Phone (SPH101) was THE answer as it does have a built in USB port http://www.netgear.com/Products/CommunicationsVoIP/Skype/SPH101.aspx.

But oh the dissapointment to learn that this USB port (on the bottom) is only for charging the battery and not an acutal USB connection.

So that leads me to ask if anyone can find a Skype Wifi phone that has a working USB port?

Thanks

Yeah but . . . . . personally my Treo is too big to carry around. I really wouldn't be even a little bit interested in adding my U720 to that mix. (Not enough pockets) Smile

But I see it moving into something in that direction. I've read where folks are installing the KR1 in their cars and setting up a mobile hot spot and using something like Skype and having some success but with the high latency we still get with EV-DO I don't ink that idea is quite ready for prime time. Not to mention how limited they are by how close they have to stay to the router.

Anyway, I realize it's quite apparent I am totally bored today stuck here in a motel at the airport in Jacksonville, Fl.

BTW - at this location I am using my Sprint U720 alone with my laptop instead of my Alltel PC5740 thru the KR1 because I am apparently right on the fringes of Alltel coverage. I can barely get a voice signal to use my Treo 650 dropping every single call I make or receive. Can't get enough signal to log on through the Alltel data card. But Sprint data is certainly alive and well here, albeit Rev 0 averaging 1300kbps down and 130kbps up. Kind of makes you wonder. This is within a mile of Jacksonville International Airport which is just outside of Jacksonville, Fl. (obviously) and in Jacksonville they have their football stadium. Home of the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL. Their home stadium? Alltel stadium. Wouldn't you think Alltel would be interested in having a strong digital presence at the airport in the city where they spend millions of dollars to paste their name all over the football stadium?

Anyway . . . . .

So why not just get a router? Get a different card (or wait for the KR1 firmware so you can use your U720) and use the Skype phone that way? I have a Sanyo 7500 I can hook up to my KR1 and use my PPC6700 (on wifi) to make Skype calls. It would be the same thing except using a card and a Skype phone.

By the way, I don't think there are any phones or PDA's now that can act as USB clients. The last ones that could were the Toshiba PDA's. - sheureka (who is sitting at home sick as a dog and bored!)

Ok, as I'm searching, I'm starting to reply to my own thread Very Happy

I've just read that user BigDave mentions that Kyocera makes an EV enabled phone that can be tethered to the USB port of a U720 Sprint modem: http://www.evdoforums.com/thread3918.html

Huh?? Wow! I don't really know how you possibly could get this statement from what I posted concerning the KR1. Here's the link to the thread (I assume you didn't mean to use the link you used? Since it had nothing to do with either your discussion or mine) http://www.evdoforums.com/thread4551.html The short of it is this is the statement I was referring to - well, even easier, here is my post in it's entirety:
Quote:
Quote:
The KR1 Mobile Router is a universal accessory that is compatible with most PCMCIA EV-DO cards, including the Kyocera Passport KPC650, or with most USB-enabled EV-DO handsets

.

I think the KR1 is a great piece of hardware and I am very happy with the performance of mine but . . . . . . it sure is strange that they pick the KPC650 and "most USB-enabled EV-DO handsets" specifically to blow their own horn about. From what I've read on this forum the KPC650 has more than it's share of issues when used with the KR1 and it seems that the last thread I read about the handsets shows they only support a handful of them and none of the real mainstream ones such as the Razor, Krazor, Treo's etc.

It's all right Dave, I misunderstood what you had said in the second half of your quote in the 13th post down at this thread:

It sounded like you were talking about what I was looking for: EV enabled phones that could be tethered to the USB Port. But, no worries, I misunderstood.

Here's what I'm thinking now. There are two PDA's that might be able to connect directly to the U720. Skype supporsts both the Trio and the Pocket PC. I'm thinking the Pocket PC (It still acts as a phone) has a better chance of working.

1) Download both the Skype software and the U720 software onto your pocket PC.

2) Connect the USB adaptor to the Pocket PC. Use a USB cable with both ends type A/female (Cabeltech sells them for $5 but it could be easily homemade) to connect the male/type B end of the pocket PC adaptor to the male/type B end of the U720.

It might work. The problems would be that your a Pocked PC might not be able to load Sprint's U720 driver. Even if that did work, the Pocket PC's batteries might not be strong enough to power the U720 for more than a couple hours.

If it did work, you'd have unlimited outgoing and incoming calls for your $59.99 flat rate AND unlimited internet. Not a bad deal. You would have to add in the $14.95 Skype flat fee for unlimited calls making it a total of $74.94. According to Skype's site:
Skype wrote:
Unlimited Calling - a full year of unlimited calls to anyone on any phone within the US and Canada for just US$14.95.

What's your opinion, do you think it will work? Would anyone who owns a Pocket PC be willing to try this and let us know?
