|
|
The iPhone looks exciting. It will make a big impact and will replace many cell phones and iPods.
We were very disappointed in Apple's decision to select EDGE, as their "high-speed" internet network.
EDGE will get you 75 - 135 Kbps and that is it.
EVDO Rev A can get you 1000kbps - 2300kbps (yes, we have been seeing those speeds on EVDO Rev A).
So, EDGE isn't very high speed. Which is probably why the first version of hte iPhone will not offer iTunes Store for purchases.
Also, in the initial iPhone demo, WiFi was being used, NOT EDGE. I think if people get this device to replace their phone and iPod (if 8GB is enough), they will be very happy. If they are getting this as an internet browser, they will be very unhappy with the speed (when using EDGE vs. WiFi).
Hey Steve, for iPhone 2.0, add EVDO Rev A and allow tethering over BlueTooth 2.0 - NOW that would be a KILLER device.

iPhone will not be used for all of the extra services the carriers are offering:
Extra charge for Bluetooth sync
TV
Music
Corporate email and syncing
iPhone will greatly impact on the future need for 3rd party software.
It will also be a MAJOR compettitor to the expensive high end phones such as Motorola and Palm and others sell.
I am sure the carriers welcome a major threat to their profit margins.
Was there any mention of using the iPhone as Modem.
There are only a few if that many other phones that will act as a wifi base station and most only act as a receiver and not as a sender. Did anyone read the fine print close enough to determine if it will act as a base station for the internet stuff? |

Even worse than no 3G is that it is a closed OS. No opportunity for the tens of thousands of 3rd party apps you can have on WM5 and PalmOS. Apple is becoming more and more a closed, proprietary Sony. Not even an SD slot.
I suppose they could always put out an SDK later, but it appears to be closed for the moment.
Another downside to Cingular is that they still charge $40/month for data service on smartphones compared to $15/month for EVDO on smartphones (Sprint).

The iPhone could only be GSM at launch given the global market for cell phones of this price range. US consumers are used to getting phones for a very low cost (in most cases) while consumers in Europe and Asia are used to paying full price.
Had Apple went with a US centric technology like CDMA they would have locked out most of the world's phone buyers. |

Exactly. I would expect if the iPhone takes off Apple will make a CDMA version of it for the US in time.
I do hope that Apple offers an unlocked and unbranded iPhone and does not fall into the trap of allowing carriers to cripple the phone.

However, look at most of the popular devices, there is a GSM and CDMA version. |

Heh, I promise that Apple (and any other handset manufacturer) has almost zero control over what can and cannot be done with a given handset in terms of software features. Carriers have huge specifications that must be met for the phone to be sold on that network. |

Exactly. And this is where Apple has the opptunity to change the industry for the better. Carrier crippling of phones is a real issue and very anti-consumer. Do they have the right, sure.
But Apple as the choice to require that its phones be allowed to work as designed meaning that the carrier provides the voice and data transport services and the phone does the rest. I have faith that given the other economic factors Apple has (iTunes for example) they will hold their ground.
We will see.

Yes, that is true. But the point of this thread is SPEED. The iPhone does 3 things. Phone, iPod, Internet device. The Phone & iPod are incredible. As an internet device, EDGE is the wrong choice (but I understand why they did). _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

| I don't get why they didn't put Cingular's 3g service on there. It's still not rev A, but it's head and shoulders over edge. |
