I have been trying to mine to work for 2 days. It doe's not matter if I am inside or out it will not find any sat's. Also google earth does not find it either. Any chance that the card I have is bad? Install of the new firmware and software went fine so I doubt that it is that. _________________ Peace

It would help if the operating system was mentioned.
It won't work at this time with Mac OS.
Under XP you must select the option under the menu for Location and Search. You can select Google, MS, etc for your maping application via the Settings menu. |

| So far I've had zero success acquiring a satellite with my S720 on windows xp. I have tried it indoors/outdoors/in a vehicle and at more than one location. It just sits there searching until it times out. Has anyone in the Detroit area had any luck with this? |

| Hmmm... I got it to work after doing the firmware update a couple days ago, but outdoors only. Tried it a few times indoors and it never worked. Just tried it outdoors and it says, 'service not available'. I wonder if it has been shutoff? |

Well after many trys and trials and much frustration, i Uninstalled the whole damn thing and started from scratch. Installed it from the disc, and then did an update. It is finally working. I dont use that Location services crap, As I am sure there are some hidden and underlying fees. (thats just how sprint operates) I use it on COM8 with Microsoft Streets and trips. It does not show my speed. or directions on the compass, but it does show me on the map, going the right direction and am able to use the turn by turn directions. I was most impressed with the accuracy for that software. I used it from NY to FL this week, and it was EXACT!!! GPS is working great.

OK, I think I know what's going on.
I was able to get GPS to work indoors consistently by setting to 1xRTT or Auto mode, not forced EVDO mode. When I do a ##DEBUG in EVDO only mode, I only see 1 or 2 towers in Active/Candidate (red/yellow) mode depending on where I am. Can't lock in a location with under 3. So I set to 1xRTT or Auto and can see many Active/Candidate towers. Guess what, GPS worked great even indoors.
I think it works in Auto EVDO mode because Auto will also see 1xRTT towers - more towers to triangulate on.
Try forcing to 1xRTT or Auto and see if it works for you. Also do a ##DEBUG over the Go button and make sure you can see at least 3 towers in red/yellow states. Those in very high density areas might have 3+ EVDO towers within reach, so GPS may work fine in forced DO mode.
Not certain this is the reason. Doing more testing. |

Hey, I think I just figured out how to get into Premium mode. I noticed the Premium option was dimmed in the Connection Manager so wondered it if is hidden in the registry. Sure enough, I was able to turn it on.
Run regedit and go here..
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Novatel Wireless\Sprint\Sprint PCS Connection Manager\3.00.000\Modules\Sprint PCS Vision - Novatel Wireless
Change the 'GPSMode' key from 0 to 1.
Run Connection Manager (quit if in CM so that regedit settings load) and go to the Location Services Settings and you'll see that Premium is turned on (instead of Basic mode).
Now, when I go to Microsoft Streets and Trips, it shows a very accurate location and shows speed as well. In Basic mode, the speed was dimmed. Not sure what all Premium does though.
Edit: Warning, use info at your own risk. It's possible this could trigger additional charges.

From page 7 of the users guide:
" In order for your device to support the new GPS/LBS features it must be in “Automatic Mode” or “1xRTT Only” mode or it will not be able to obtain the location information from the Location Server. EVDO Only Mode will not allow for support of LBS services. "

More good information from the users guide:
| Quote: | Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: What is GPS?
A: The Global Positioning System (GPS), is a term used for satellite navigation systems. More than two dozen GPS satellites orbit the Earth, transmitting radio signals which allow GPS receivers to determine their location, speed and direction.
Q: What are Location based services (LBS)
A: Location Based services are the ability for your device to get its current position from the Location Server on the Sprint network and provide you the ability to find nearby locations such as Gas stations, Hotels, Restaurants, Banks, etc.
Q: Do I have to sign up for this service? What do I have to do to use it?
A: At this time, Sprint Nextel Location and Search usage is included as part of Sprint’s flexible data and unlimited data connection card plans. Additional terms and restrictions apply. To use this service, the user must accept the Sprint Privacy Consent Agreement. (See item 3 above).
Q: How does the first GPS ‘fix’ work?
A: Once you connect to the Sprint network you should get a fix within 10 seconds.
Q Is there a timer before another fix can be given?
A: Fixes are currently cached for 5 minutes. During that time, any queries the user makes will reuse the same GPS location coordinate values.
Q: Does this device actually use GPS satellites to calculate its locations?
A: It depends. If you are indoors, then the answer is no – instead, AFLT is used. AFLT uses base station triangulation to calculate your location. If you are outside, then it will use MS-Based GPS and actual satellites are used to determine your location.
Q: What is AFLT?
A: Advanced Forward Link Trilateration. AFLT is a type of device-based position location technology. Unlike A-GPS, AFLT does not use GPS satellites to determine location. To determine location, the phone takes measurements of signals from nearby cellular base stations (towers) and reports the time/distance readings back to the network, which are then used to triangulate an approximate location of the handset. In general, at least three surrounding base stations are required to get an optimal position fix.
Q: What is A-GPS?
A: Assisted GPS is a technology that uses an assistance server to cut down the time needed to determine a location using GPS.
Q: How accurate is AFLT if you are not using real satellites.
A: AFLT accuracy is limited to the geometry of the Cell towers surrounding the device requesting location information. The better the triangulation the more accurate the fix.
Q: What does MS-Based mean?
A: MS-Based GPS is defined as an implementation where assistance data is provided to the MS, by the Location server, such that the MS can calculate its own location estimate.
Q: Will my device location services work indoors?
A: Yes, but it uses AFLT to determine your location. This version of the service works best when the user is outdoors. Please see the help files of the Connection Manager software for more details.
Q: What does the “Test GPS” button do?
A: It gets a fix. This is a quick way to validate if device is able to obtain location coordinates - if this works the application used with this device in the same location will also work.
Q: What info does “Test GPS” show in the box?
A: It tests the GPS mode that the device is configured for. In the case of the Sprint Mobile Broadband Cards, it will test for MS-Based, and is used for testing if the satellites are available. Autonomous and MS-Assisted are not available in this version.
Q: What does “HEPE” mean?
A: Horizontal Estimated Position Error. HEPE is an EPE without considering the inaccuracy of your altitude reading. Because of the inherent difficulty of calculating altitude with GPS, an HEPE is usually a smaller number than EPE.
Q: Will Location Based services also work in NDIS mode?
A: Yes, LBS will work in either Dial Up Networking (DUN) or Network Device Interface Specification (NDIS) mode. |
This is a really cool "lagniappe" that I wasn't expecting when I selected this card. Thanks, Sprint. (now come on already with Rev. A in Dallas - that I was expecting.)

XENOPHON DOES IT AGAIN!
I tried to get GPS to acquire by every permutation except changing the Mode settings from EVDO Only to Automatic. Automatic solved the problem immediately. Location and Search Services works fine with NDIS checked too.
CHEROKEE and GBATEMAN, changing to Automatic from EVDO Only may fix your acquisition problems as well.
Thanks, Xeno. Your Premium fix seems to work too. _________________ Vista64 & EX720 |
