Current users must upgrade their connection manager software by 04/30/2007 to ensure access to Sprint's growing EVDO Rev A footprint.

The original date was 02/28/2007, but Sprint recently pushed it back to 04/30/2007.

Current Connection Managers can be downloaded at:

http://www.sprint.com/downloads/

Failure to upgrade firmware could result in inability to connect.

The cards affected are:

Novatel S720
Novate U720
Sierra Wireless AC595
Pantech PX-500

No mention of the embedded laptops that use the EXPD ES720. Since Sprint doesn't support these directly, I guess it is up to Sony, HP, Dell and others?

Strangely, this is very similar to the following Verizon thread:

Upgrade your firmware or else?? (Verizon Rev A Feb 2007)

To take advantage of the Rev A towers would they not have to release new PRL updates for the cards ?

I have not been keeping up with things the last month or so, so my questions is, when/where were we supposed to be notified about this?

Quite possibly. When I got my PX-500, there was already an updated Connection Manager and updated firmware (so it could do Rev A) waiting to be loaded.

Just a word of warning. I used the connection manager to update the software and for some reason it corrupted the connection manager so it will not run so make sure you have a copy of the manager to install as if this is your only connection to the internet you will be screwed if you don't have a way to reinstall.

There's an option for monthly updates in the Connection Manager and you can check the manual update page anytime you want.

I check for updates on a regular basis but my wife, however, missed the last two updates prior to the one on 1/8/07 and the connection manager software would not update. I had to manually update the software from the sprint website. Not sure if it was something particular to her laptop or the missed updates causing a problem but all is well now.

FWIW, I was on the phone with technical support this evening to get a couple of questions answered, while my S720 card was finishing getting updated. Un-prompted the tech said that I shouldn't update my firmware as there have been problems with loss of function after the update. The fix appears to be to go back to the previous firmware release. I told the tech too late as the update finished as he was telling me not to update.

Fortunately my card still works after the update and better yet, I now get a signal strength indication for the card when it is in my Linksys router, something which has never worked before.

I preface this post with FWIW, because, frankly the tech struck me as one of the least sophisticated and most ignorant techs I've ever spoken with.

Say it ain't so! I'm a bit lost in pronouns. Are you saying the firmware upgrade v1.6.135 below (part of SCM v3.08.013) configured our modems back to the state before SCM v3.07.005 did its firmware upgrade?

I just did the update for my S620 (via the connection manager) and now the connection manager stops responding after a few hours of use.

Any known issues with the S620?

Not how do I get notified about software updates or how to check for them (automagically by the Connection Manager or manually by checking the Sprint web site). I know about all those.

But where is it written down and how were we to be notified that we must update before 2/28 or we will lose connectivity????? I checked the for the update after seeing this thread, but there wasn't any such warning or notice to be found anywhere on the software update web pages. I oft times skip software updates unless I know for sure that they are really needed.

Michael will have to respond to that since he is the one who made the post.

However, if I may speculate, the units listed were shipped without the Rev A firmware and thus require the latest upgrade which supplies the firmware upgrade. The post states that you will not be able to use Rev A, assuming you are in an appropriate area with the Rev A ability, if you do not upgrade.

No firmware upgrade, no Rev a.

Many posts ago it was pointed out that many units with Rev A ability where shipped BEFORE the Rev A firmware was available. Thus they would need a firmware upgrade to use Rev A.
