You can pretty much count on someone always working on something faster when it comes to this stuff. There's been some early info posted here from time to time.
| isamu wrote: | | When do you suspect we will be able to get speeds that rival cable but all wireless? |
No idea. I'm not Carnack the Magnificent you know. (definitely dating myself there).
| isamu wrote: | | Is WiMax the solution? If not, what else are they working on for the future? |
If I could accurately predict stuff like that, I could afford my own T3 line. Who knows? People have their opinions but it will have to get battled out in the marketplace to know for sure. Do a Google search and you can probably find some info on next generation wireless technology. Keep in mind, some non-wireless technologies might also make an impact. Long distance power line data transfer might finally get sorted out into a viable technology, for instance. I'm not holding my breath though. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve. |

Well, EVDO can get a lot faster. Google EVDO Rev B and even Rev C. They have some very nice speeds that will very easily rival cable and other fiber connections. However, these are very long off. But, the nice thing is the rest of the "upgrades" are software based for the carriers. So all Sprint or Verizon will have to do is send an update file to the cell phone tower. You will of course need a new card... the execs have yachts to pay for!
WiMax or city-wide mesh networks are not an answer either. I havent seen any more development on global WiMax. Especially now that these carriers have roaming agreements with each other and have most areas, even rural areas covered with high speed (some areas like out here in CO have Rev A, when you cant get DSL or cable!) I would not hold my breath for WiMax. My prediction: they will keep working on these cellular/terrestrial networks and upgrading them to surpass some wireline (DSL,cable) connections. I know I saw a special on the Discovery channel that they will start using lasers from space to communicate data and voice, but you are talking a number of years down the road! _________________

UALCOMM Expects Commercialization of EV-DO Rev. B in 2007
Next Evolution of EV-DO Triples Wireless Bandwidth
LAS VEGAS — April 07, 2006 — QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other advanced wireless technologies, today unveiled more of the Company's strategy for driving CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO Revision B to market. Still on schedule for commercialization in 2007, QUALCOMM's chipset solutions for the EV-DO Rev. B standard will support unsurpassed wireless data rates to provide the springboard for delivering next-generation wireless data, music, gaming and multimedia entertainment devices.
“Consumers want devices that are smaller, lighter, faster, cheaper, as well as fully featured and with longer battery life,” said Dr. Sanjay K. Jha, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. “We are committed to enabling our customers to meet these market demands, rapidly moving forward in the evolution of CDMA2000 technology to bring unprecedented levels of data throughput and network capacity with EV-DO Rev. B - capabilities that are necessary to support tomorrow's high-performance wireless applications.”
Mobile Station Modem™ (MSM™) solutions for EV-DO Rev. B will be highly integrated with advanced functionality, support the operation of up to three simultaneous channels of 1.25 MHz each for higher-speed data rates and deliver significant space-savings for devices that are thinner, smaller and lighter. The EV-DO Rev. B standard supports up to 4.9 Mbps in each channel for a combined three-channel data speed of up to 14.7 Mbps on the downlink. With the processing power necessary for true multi-tasking capabilities that support the convergence of multiple consumer electronics features, and the ability to leverage the wireless bandwidth required to deliver these mobile services, QUALCOMM's chipsets for EV-DO Rev. B will deliver advanced functionality in a single compact, fully optimized device. QUALCOMM expects the first commercial EV-DO Rev. B products to be data modems available in late 2007, with additional wireless devices available soon thereafter.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Now that's what I'm talking about!
Based on that announcement, Revision B will also be able to combine three channels to increase download and upload speeds to 14.7 Mbps and 5.4 Mbps respectively!! WOW!! |

I even got my card working with second life.
Some times in second life data transfer gets over 100kb/sec. Most internet connection intensive game I've ever seen and it runs pretty well. _________________ Merlin S720 |

I use Kai and it always reports my ping being bad. But I recently upgraded to the latest patch for the connection manager. Too my surpise I am able to get EVDO. Yet I have to be careful to restrict it to EVDO only because it switches to 1xRTT by itself. And.... Kai still states my ping is bad
Anyhow,
I played neverwinter nights over 1xRTT it had no lag. I played rainbow 6 over 1xRTT and it was rough. Lag was bad. I've yet to try EVDO because of my friends never being on. Or they only play 360.
Still yet to upgrade to one.
I had this device working in Linux as well. Too bad there is no connection software to show you the signal strenght. It's also terrible that there is no configuration options you can perform under other operating systems. Although I'm sure there must be some way to pass commands to switch modes. Anyone know of some AT commands to set the modes???
At&F M1 S11=33 ... just like the old days

I have Rev A and using ICS. Today, I've had pretty bad lag and was forced to leave several games of Halo 2 since everyone was popping up out of no where. If this continues, I'll post about it, but the past few days have been great and only had the occasional lag, which I think everyone has had at some point no matter what type of connection.
I'm hoping the router I plan to buy will fix the problems since I think ICS may be contributing to the problem.
BTW, how do I check my ping? |

| I have been playing xbox live and halo 2 for a few days now. I have used dial up (usually about 24.0kbs according to bottom right thing) and it is playable, but it isnt perfect. I sometimes am disconnected and it takes about thirty seconds or so to get back in the game and the other people are sometimes a little laggy. it was not enough to keep me off of it though. Yesterday i tried out my friends dad's evdo conection(through a razr on alltel). He had about 500 down and 50 up. Halo was better, but about every third or fourth game we would get disconnected. people were much smoother but still not perfect. I also noticed he has his evdo routed through his computer to a router like how you do ICS on Xbox live to get WIFI in his house. I hope to be getting evdo through alltel this week and i will post back on how some other 360 games are. |

I've used EVDO with both ICS and with a hardware router. Really never saw any added latency from ICS. But a hardware router might help.

You can run ping from the Windows command line to a known site (Yahoo or Google are often good). Or run a freeware traceroute program. I happen to like PingPlotter myself, but there are other good free ones out on the Internet. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve. |

U720 USB user here. I play world of warcraft with a EVDO rev-a connection. When i first log on, my latency bar is green (180-200ms) then after a couple of minutes it starts creeping up on me to yellow (200-300ms) and for the most part stays yellow, which is perfectly playable.
Then there are those days. Ill log in and my bar is solid red with a latency of 1500-2300ms and makes the game totally unplayable (especially when your a caster type character)
I sent my xbox360 in for repairs due to the 3 red light syndrome and should be back anytime now. Im hoping with a latency of 200-300 itll be ok to play forza 2 online.
Thats my experience with the U720 playing games online. _________________ U720-sprint-XP |

I picked up a U720 through Sprint specifically for playing the 360 online, and it's been pretty good for the most part.
Here's my setup-
I'm getting EVDO Rev A with signal strengths that hover around -85db. I'm using ICS and have a wireless extender hooked to my 360 that allows it to connect to my router as a wireless device(saves 75 bucks over the 360's wireless solution). My normal speed tests run around 1250 down and 250 up. Ping rates to yahoo.com usually run 180ms - 225ms.
I've played the following games via Live-
Call Of Duty 2- Ping rate in a game usually hovers around 350 in the lobby screen. It's playable, but not as smooth as it should be. I'll notice a slight delay after firing a shot.
Tiger Woods 07- plays well..... sometimes have issues changing clubs and stuff, but it's not much of an issue really.
PGR3 - EXCELLENT!! Works as well as any game I've played on the 360. You cant tell you're online.... it's as if you're hooked to a network and playing via a LAN connection.
Forza Motorsports 2 - mixed results..... most of the time though it's as if the cars you're racing against get out of synch position wise and then they correct themselves abruptly. So cars in front of you seem to be zigzagging all over the track. Once they're closer to you, it seems to keep them more in synch. Some days have been better than others though.
The Billiards game from Live's Arcade- works fine.... turn based so there's no reall issues.
I've downloaded updates, demos, and videos with no problems. Chatting works fine with no delay from either Live or within games.
Hope this helps anyone that was looking for more info..... take care!

Update
Today, I played Halo 2 online and it worked better than ever before. Not only did I have little to no lag, but I was able to play in 16 player battles.
I think it may have been because I made some edits in my computer's registry. |

If you put in the same IP as the one you saw when you ran an IP config then yes you definitely have an IP conflict. The IP you need to enter is something out of the same subnet.
So for example if your subnet is 192.168.1.0 and your PC ip (the ip you get when you run IP config) is 192.168.1.1 then you need to configure your XBOX with something else out of that range (eg. 192.168.1.10) your subnet mask would be 255.255.255.0 and your default gateway would be 192.168.1.1 then you need to fill int he DNS portion. I usually use something on the internet like 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2.
I would recommend letting the XBOX get DHCP if I were you. Lot less problems.
Try changing the XBOX back to DHCP or configuring it with new setting and run the XBOX check again to see what it responds with. |
