Definitely looking forward to your results. I have this phone, and a 12" PowerBook. I would love to use it over USB.
Quick question - have you got it working over Bluetooth with Tiger? If so, could you point me towards some instructions or a How To? |

| I'm playing around with this as well. Haven't gotten anything to work as of yet, but would LOVE to hear about it if you get things rolling. |

Hi-
I'm new here and am looking into getting this phone and have a 12" PB. You all know the issues with that and PC cards, so I was hoping this worked. How's it going? I get the idea that bluetooth is too slow, but what about using a USB cable. Has anyone had any luck with anything regarding this phone as a modem with OS X 10.4?
Thanks

The closest I've gotten is using it as a USB modem through Virtual PC on my 15" Powerbook. I just used the same steps as outlined for PC users. It works fine and has a great connection speed in my area the only downside is that the connection is only recognized by Virtual PC and not by any of my other Apps. So for just surfing the web or checking email on the road this is a great solution... for now.
My biggest problem with the whole thing is my disapointment in knowing that it is physically possible for my thousands of dollars of hardware to inteact properly with each other with only a few hundred bucks worth of software yet neither Apple nor Verizon has stepped up to help out their customers.

You could run a Proxy server under Virtual PC and have it act as a gateway for you... or use Microsoft's built in Internet Connection Sharing and have NAT... |

I am sorry to report, that I have been unable to get the Audiovox XV6600 to work as a EVDO modem to my iBook or PowerBook 12 (or any other powerbook).
EVEN if I did get it to work, the amount of steps one would have to do, just to get it to connect would preclude the normal person from actually using it.
I suspect the Samsung i730 may have the same problems, since there isn't a specific driver available for it. There are steps to make it work with PC, but, since we are missing a driver for Mac.
If anyone has anything different to report, or in the future if this becomes something that does work, please post the additional information here. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

...I have had the XV6600 working as a evdo modem for my Sony U750P since January...
...Verizon high level techs helped me set it up...
...and it's done over Dial Up Networking (DUN). Don't ask *me* how to set it up...they did it for me.
Problem is, I don't like it...I want an *always on* connection...plus, in this mode, the XV6600 can no longer function as a phone. When it's transferring data via bluetooth over the DUN on the Sony U750P, it can't send or receive voice.
Plus, bluetooth's software stack cuts the evdo speeds from an average of 400-500 kps to only about 100-230 kps received on the Sony U750P. |

Michael, whether it's with a Mac or a Windows PC, why would anyone use DUN bluetooth networking to connect to the evdo network on a laptop with a PCMCIA card?
The PCMCIA card is so much easier...plug and play, basically.
I don't understand why anyone would do this with a computing device unless it lacked a PCMCIA slot (such as a Sony U750P or an oQo for example).
Can someone enlighten me?

1. Even the EVDO PC Cards are using Windows DUN services, they just hide most of it behind the VZAcess Manager client. I still get occassional dialog boxes asking if I want to redial a number via the EVDO modem from time to time (even though VZAcess Manager has already done it). I'd prefer it if they had made it a network driver interface instead of a dialup interface, but at least they're doing an OK job of keeping most of the dialup complexities under the covers.
2. As you and Michael said, lack of slots.
3. They already have a phone and feel that laying out additional $ for a second plans makes no sense (though Verizon has structured the plans to make it a wash, aside from equipment costs).
4. Perhaps they have a Sprint EVDO card (or some other similar service) and want the availability to use a Verizon phone for better coverage based on location.
5. They are masochistic, er, I mean, enjoy a challenge.
