Does the end cap serve any purpose other than concealing the modem plug when the device is not in use?

No other purpose (concealing and protecting when not in use).

Novatel used a type A USB receptacle which is molded/filled with black plastic (that's the round 'button' you see on the tip of the cap).

BTW... don't drop your Ovation cap. One hard landing left mine in three pieces. That's how I know what the inside looks like. :]
