Newbie question: Have a Pantech PX500 for a month (three days short of the return window). Pretty happy with it other than it does not initialize after the computer is brought back from a standby mode.
Have been reading all the posts about the Novatel USB modem and am struggling to decide if I should keep my Pantech or go for the Novatel. The Sprint dealer is ready to swap it, I am not sure if this is the route I'd want to go. My primary use is in a Dell D620 that I dont think will be replaced atleast for a year and dont have any plans of using with a MAC or a router.
I use the laptop in a lot of public areas and the USB modem seems to be a little vulnerable to theft and the idea of using cables to attach it seem a bit not portable. The Pantech sits in the PCMCIA slot and I never remove it. Besides "free" is good.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and Merry Christmas! |

I made a little video comparing the two and posted to a few other threads, here is the link:

If having a USB device isn't important for compatibility, stick with the PX-500, the performance between the two is nearly identical.
The USB, does have the advantage of being able to use the cable to move the EVDO Modem away from the RF interference of the computer and that actually gives you an additional gain. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Its hard to say one is better than the other, really.
Both devices are still fairly new but you'll find that most think the devices work very well... a lot of people on these forums have posted that they found great success with each one.
While the PX-500 is aesthetically more appealing to many when it sits in its PC Card slot, that slot format is going away as more and more expresscard slots appear on new laptops. The big advantage the Novatel U720 has is that it works with far more computers than the PX-500 because of format.
Both devices have external antenna jacks and even with built in antenna's many have reported good signal reception.
The PX-500 is free after rebate. The U720, is $49 after rebate/credit.
Free wins every time, don't it? |
