Well I bought an AirCard 595, an external antenna adapter, some PVC pipe, etc. and built an omni antenna like http://martybugs.net/wireless/collinear.cgi.
In my house, I'm at ~ -99dB with no external antenna, -92dB with added antenna, and -80 on my roof with 15' of low loss 400 coax.
Temporary roof-level speedtest.net:
ping ~300ms, Download ~1300kbps, Upload ~100kbps
It's a keeper -- so much better than dialup. I still need to complete the permanent rooftop antenna mount and run some CAT5 inside my house, but it's great to be on the "highway"
Thanks to everyone for all the info - I couldn't have done it without this forum...

Until 2 or 3 weeks ago I was in a similar situation, except I was trying to pull in an EVDO signal from 10 to 12 miles away. Eventually through 8 months of trial and error and lots of money spent on antennas, amps, cables and adapters I was able to finally secure a usable signal......a whole week before they turned EVDO on at my local tower. The final solution for me ended up being a TV satellite dish mated to a 13 db flat panel antenna, 40 foot of ultra low loss cable and a 3 watt amp ( Maximum Signal Model ). This setup was usable but by no means totally satisfactory and it became more of a quest for me than anything else. The expense was totally out of wack compared to the performance I was receiving, upload speed was especially weak and erratic.
Good Luck |
Is there somewhere I could get plans for changing a TV satellite dish into one for use with a Wilson amp?
Thanks |

Thank you very much.
Interesting, it looks like dishes are already an N type plug, so I might not need some kind of adapter for the LMR-400 cable that came with the kit.
So I take it your design uses the 1900mhz yagi antenna in place of the can? Does the antenna point into the dish's parablola, or out towards the cell tower? |

It is not my design. I just provided the link. I've not tried it. I think using a yagi would be very difficult to tune as opposed to a dipole in the can. Since a yagi has very little RF gain from the rear lobe, pointing away from the parabola won't gain you much signal. You can try it both ways but I believe you will see better results with it facing the dish. _________________ evdo-tips.com |

You may try Trevor Marshall's biquad on a primestar dish.
Any type of dish will work actually.
the biquad will use more of the reflector surface of the dish and increase the gain over using the di-pole with can wave guide.
I have tried both and the biquad is far superior.
Make sure you use the 1900mhz dimensions.
Sierra 597, 15' lmr400 cable. Rssi -77 to -82 with antenna.
without antenna -104 to -109 |

I have my yagi antenna up right now, but not fully tuned as I don't have the equipment to mount it yet.
I've seen that being close to the inside antenna with my Q9C I get 3 or 4 bars worth of connection, but for some reason, EVDO isn't available.
Any idea what that's about?
I can get an EVDO signal in parts of the house, but seems like I can't when operating a booster.
Could sprint be using 800 mhz for EVDO in my area? |

| You can go here (http://www.wirelessadvisor.com/) and type your zip in to see what carriers are using in your area. |
