Looking for everything you every wanted to know about Mac EVDO?

We setup a page that explains it all, it is called:

Mac EVDO

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello,

We have been talking with a developer who created a driver for Novatel V620 and Mac OS X. This is not a Terminal Hack (like we document at EVDOinfo.com), but rather a simple installer.

Here is a PDF file for installing (it is VERY Mac like):

Download Installation Directions PDF

We are looking for a handful of people to test this installer. Send me a private message on EVDOforums if you have time and would like to test it. Sometime next week, I will publish the URL for all to download.

The installer DOES NOT ADD:

- signal strength indicator
- EVDO vs. 1xRTT indicator
- activating the card

Here is the GOOD NEWS. The developer is working on a Mac OS X widget that will provide this functionality.

If you have previously performed the documented Terminal Hack to get your V620 working, you will need to REVERT the ProductID and VendorID fields BEFORE installing this driver.

What I recommend, if you are currently using the V620 with the hack that we document, there is no need to download this. WAIT for the Tiger Widget that shows you Signal Strength and network being used and then download.

I do NOT have an estimated time for completion.

The Developer of the driver (who already visits EVDOForums.com), will be answering questions and posting more info to THIS thread.

We have our second confirmation that these drivers are working fine with Mac OS X.

Good news and bad news. I can confirm two things...

First, I don't know if it has been discussed before but you can not activate the V620 using VirtualPC. (Bad news for anyone that doesn't have easy access to a PC laptop)

Second, the new easy installer works great with Tiger 10.4.1. I activated my card on a PC laptop and then popped it into my 15" PB, followed the directions in the PDF from this website and was up and running in minutes!

That is noted before you download, you need to have the Novatel V620 activated in a PC first. If you order from us, there is an option that says, Mac User - Preactive and the card will come ready to use.

...but after attempting the installer, following the manual instructions caused my 15" Powerbook running Mac OS X/Tiger 10.4.1 to recognize the Novatel Merlin S620, the Sprint version of this card.

(The only difference in the manual instructions for Sprint is that you don't need to enter your username and password into the Network PPP prefs, just the "#777" phone number. Incidentally, I selected the "Verizon Support (V620)" modem script, and it connected flawlessly to Sprint -- 3G/Vision, not EVDO, as Sprint hasn't yet rolled out EVDO here in the Washington DC metro area.)

I'm running a 15" PowerBook w/Tiger 10.4.1 and I can't get things to work. After I run the installer, I put the V620 from Verizon in and...absolutely nothing happens. It's as if the OS isn't seeing the card. Any thoughts for me?

Did you activate your card?
If you get your card from Micheal, he would do that for you

Sorry to leave that information out, yes the card has been activated and verified to work in a PC.

Here's something interesting that I uncovered while continuing to look at this: unlike other cards, when I plug the V620 into my PowerBook, no information under the PC Cards entry in System Profiler. I tried an old modem card just to make sure the slot is working and, while OS X didn't recognize the card (no drivers), it did show it as being inserted and being an unknown card. In the case of the V620, I get none of that (no card icon in the tool bar, no entry in System Profiler).

I'm really stumped.

UPDATE:
I just checked the console log and, on insert of the card I get the following entry:
Code:
kernel[0]: IOPCCard info:   cs: cb_alloc(bus 1): unable to create cardbus nub for socket 0

Both before and after I got my card to work, it did not show anything under Profiler's Hardware>PC Cards but, rather, under Hardware>USB in one of the USB Bus entries. The card icon in the tool bar was (and is) visible and did (and does) still show Unknown Vendor and USB Controller.

Here's what it looks like on my system:

Perhaps you have a defecto-card, or perhaps it has to do with the model of your Mac hardware?

That indicates a general error in IOPCCardCreateCardBusNub() which just evidently calls createCardBusNub(). I can't find any further info about why that would fail with a quick search on ADC.

Here's what I see in my syslog upon card insertion:

Code:

Perhaps you have a permissions problem? Try running fix permissions in Disk Utility?

FYI, here are some of my device permissions; keep in mind that I'm logged in as an administrator:

If you have attempted the automatic installer, and it doesn't seem to work for you, here is something to check on your Mac. Open a Terminal window and paste the following exact command (should be all on one line):

Code:
grep -e '\(5136\|4368\)' /System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleVerizonSupport*.kext/Contents/Info.plist

You should see these lines as output:

Code:
/System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleVerizonSupport.kext/Contents/Info.plist:   <integer>4368</integer>
/System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleVerizonSupport.kext/Contents/Info.plist:   <integer>5136</integer>
/System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleVerizonSupportKicker.kext/Contents/Info.plist:                      <integer>4368</integer>
/System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleVerizonSupportKicker.kext/Contents/Info.plist:                      <integer>5136</integer>

If you do not see these lines, then you may need to follow the "manual" modification instructions at http://evdoinfo.com/Tips/PC_5220/PowerBook_Mac_OS_X_Directions_To_Use_Novatel_V620_20050414238/

After following these instructions properly, I believe that your Mac should be able to recognize the Verizon V620/Sprint S620 PC card.

Hi,

I'm very excited because I just got working a Novatel V620 running on my Mac OS X (after having activated the card on a PC). However, I use Microsoft VirtualPC to run my corporate apps and connected to my office. When in my Windows XP Pro mode, it seems like it doesn't recognize my successful V620 connection on my OS X.

I know others might not be attempting to do what I'm trying to do but I would greatly appreciate any ideas to get both worlds working.

Thank you,

Chamrong
