I am running a Kyocera KPC650 card (via an adapter card) in my desktop with a booster antenna. I have been using this for about a year now with no problems. I would now like to be able to network my son's desktop for internet access. What's the best way to accomplish this? Kyocera KR1? What other hardware/software is required? Is there a better option?
Micheal,
I purchased my current setup from boosterantenna and am happy with it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

Michael,
What other hardware do I need to make this work? I have a Dell Wireless 1450 USB adapter that came with my computer that I have never used. Needed? I have a Dell 8400 and my sons is a Dell Dimension E510. Any special cards/misc that I need to have? He would also like to link up his PS2 to play games online. Is that possible/feesible? I think that the PS2 only has a phone type connection. Would gaming be possible on EVDO?

a cheaper way would be to hook up a normal WiFi router to your PC (via ethernet adapter or connect to the router wirelessly with a WiFi PCI card), then set the ethernet to some static IP address with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 Next, you would set all the "client" PC's to have the same IP address, only with a different ending. After this, you would set the DNS and Gateway to the same IP address as the computer with the EVDO card.
I can attest that this set up works very well (I currently use it for my dial-up). The only disadvantage is you lose QoS... |

Fox McCloud,
With a regular wifi router, I was told that I would have to have my pc on and connect via VZAccess Manager (since the Kyocera card resides in my pc) and then the second pc could then use the connection. My pc becomes the server and has to be on and logged on to the internet. Is that right? I was thinking that with the KR1 it is more of a 'server' itself and it wouldn't matter if my pc was on or not. The connection would be made thru the KR1 and then either pc could then access the internet. Is that right? Sorry for what seems dumb questions for most. I just don't deal with this stuff much.

You are 100% correct.
Your PC would need to be on and connected and becoming the "server". With an EVDO router, like the KR1, the router is the server and either computer can be on or off and they will connect through the KR1. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Michael,
Thanks. I like the KR1 setup better. If I have to start my pc and log in, my son might as well use mine instead of starting both. I'm guessing that it would be too much trouble and he would end up mine most of the time and I'd just have wasted time and money setting up the std router. I will still need some kind of wireless network cards or USB adapters to receive the signal from the KR1 right? Std network cards work ok or is there something special that I need to look for to talk with the KR1?

I placed an order with boosterantenna for the KR1 yesterday. I am currently using a KRC650 card and one of the tombstone booster antennas. I am assuming that I will still need to use the booster antenna with the KR1. My understanding is that the card and the booster antenna still pull in the signal but I can play with the location of the KR1 to see where I get the best signal strength. I am currently getting 2 bars (-94dBm). Is this about average? If this is where I max out for my location with the setup that I have, what would be the next step to improve the speed? Different antenna? Amplifier?
What other hardware do I need to go with the KR1 to network 2 pc's? If the KR1 ends up close enough to my pc, I assume that an ethernet cable would be the best connection? If not I would need a wireless card, correct? Anything special that I need to look for in a wireless card? |

You might be best to try an external antenna next . The materials used to construct the building you are in might be blocking the RF . If that does not show you the increase in signal you are looking for then you should consider an amplifier. |

best bet is to plug both into the KR1 via ethernet ... no need to buy wireless cards and config the clients that way
KR1 pretty "plug and play" |
