yes, they have recently rolled out evdo in the following towns:
Farmville, VA
Clarksville, VA
Bracey, VA
South Hill, VA
Kenbridge, VA
Victoria, VA
Keysville, VA
I'm using the bracey tower w/ broadband access. I'm about 3 miles from the tower getting between 600-900 kbps. I'm thinking about getting an evdo antenna to test. |
How has your coverage been today because the clarksville tower has been 1X all day. |

Supposedly EVDO will be available in the Roanoke, Christiansburg, and Floyd, VA areas by November. |
According to the rep at the VZW store at Crossroads Mall, EVDO will be turned up on 12/31 for the Roanoke SID. For whatever that's worth... we shall see. |

Well, as of today, 12/26, EVDO is live in Roanoke, VA. Added the $44.95 unlimited data package to my plan this afternoon. Working great so far. |

I've noticed from time to time, when going from a non EVDO area to an EVDO area, my phone doesn't recognize EVDO at first. However, powering down my phone and back on brings it right up. Also, it seems like EVDO signal bars aren't as real time as 1x signal. I have the RAZR Maxx Ve. |

Roanoke Virginia Area Report and Questions -
Below is an excerpt from the 12/27 Roanoke Times newspaper about Verizon coverage. The coverage map at the Verizon site does not yet reflect the new service.
I have some questions.
1) Based on what you read below, is this Rev. A coverage?
2) Some of the other posts show service now in Roanoke and "EV" on cell phones. My Verizon Blackberry does not show EV yet, just 1X - does that mean no coverage where I am?
3) The local cell phone store said that if you can get Verizon cell phone coverage in this area, you will be able to get EVDO coverage. It sounds like all Verizon cell towers in this area would have access to the new "switch", but is it possible they would connect some towers and not others in the area?
---------------------
Roanoke Times, 12/27/07
Verizon Wireless announced Wednesday the opening of a multimillion-dollar switching station in Roanoke that essentially puts Southwest Virginia in a designated lane of the high-speed Internet highway….The technology has been anxiously awaited in the Roanoke market, where cellphone and pocket computer users haven't been able to quickly browse the Web, manage e-mail, or download music and video.
Verizon Wireless, courtesy of its VCast technology, is the first provider to offer such services in the area, according to John Johnson, spokesman for Verizon. AT&T will be following with its Mobile Broadband service in mid-2008….The old network carried voice and data services at speeds of 60 to 90 kilobits per second -- just slightly faster than the fastest dial-up connection. The new network connects computers and personal digital assistants to the Internet at speeds of 600 kilobits to 1.4 megabits per second.
The switching center will give all Verizon customers who live and travel throughout Southwest Virginia access to the high-speed network. The network extends from Fairfield, W.Va., through Lexington, Roanoke, Salem, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Radford and Pulaski. It also extends along Interstate 64 to Covington and includes portions of Alleghany, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, Roanoke and Rockbridge counties. |

O.K., it's official, Verizon Rev A is now turned on in the area around Roanoke, Blacksburg, Radford, and Christiansburg, VA. I kept waiting for the EV signal to show up on my Blackberry, but it turns out you have to update some software or something. The guy at the Verizon authorized dealer had me dial in *22899 and where it used to say 1X it now says 1X EV.
I drove around the area and finally to my home northeast of Virginia Tech and sure enough, the EV signal was 2 to 4 bars everywhere. My neighbor went to the Verizon store and got a USB 720 card and she is in business.
I am waiting until Tuesday for my CTR350 router and UM150 card to arrive. Finally be able to turn off the modem! |

Haven't read all of the replies-- so sorry if I have repeated something.

I'm using the USB 720 card.
Love love love it.

Yes, I can also confirm that the following areas have Verizon EVDO Rev-A coverage:
Floyd, VA (Including Willis, Check, and Indian Valley)
Hillsville, VA
Riner, VA
Christiansburg, VA
Pilot, VA
Radford, VA
Roanoke, VA
I have also heard that Copper Hill, VA has EVDO, but have not been there recently to test myself. |

Verizon Wireless has now expanded coverage in Jasonville, Indiana. This also covers the gap between Jasonville and Linton (such as Midland).
It's also EVDO. This helps me greatly, as I often travel to that area. Before, coverage was horrible (dropped calls). Now with EVDO, I should be able to be even more mobile with my work. |
