Verizon Wireless, the second- largest U.S. mobile provider has signed up more than 500,000 high-speed wireless customers, its Chief Executive Denny Strigl said on Tuesday. Strigl said the service, which is costing $1 billion to build, is not yet profitable, but is off to a good start with the subscriptions.

"We feel very good about it," Strigl said on the sidelines of a Yankee Group conference where he delivered a keynote speech.

Do the math, @ $80/month that is 40 million a month. Many corporate accounts get discounts, but still 30 - 35 million a month seems like a good start.

Michael - hard to tell from the paraphrase in the article, but that number may include NationalAccess (1xRTT) users as well, yes? Does Verizon have any other plans (e.g. hotspots) that might be rolled into that number as well?

Or, are you pretty sure it's referring to the BroadbandAccess plan?

I read that as 500,000 high speed (broadbandaccess) customers.

Hell, with the low-ball # of 35 million a month, thats only 29 months until the initial investment is paid off with no further base growth... and we know that it will grow.

Not too bad.

When I found out my company got a 20% discount ($63.99) a month, I dropped my old SAT/Dial-Return system in a heartbeat. (I was paying about the same $$$) I was tired of flaky service and FAP crap. Day 3 now on EV-DO and I'm very pleased with it at my home and now I can even take it on the road with me and not have to go searching for "hot spots". I love it.

Just an update to this thread.

It appears that 500,000 number does include 1xRTT (NationalAccess) customers. Read this blog for more info on the numbers:
