Thanks for the info. I had the same problem. Used older laptop in safe mode with old version of Internet explorer and it worked perfectly the first time using the unbricking procedures. It doesn't work (at least for me) on the new version of IE 7 or Firefox 2. I'm guessing there will be a lot of problems with people using these browsers.

I appear to be having the same problem unbricking with IE 7 and Firefox. Has anybody found any other solution to this besides the pain of trying to "roll back" to IE 6? Is there any other browser I can try to install without messing up IE7?

Well, after all the horror stories here, I was crossing my fingers during the upgrade. I got my KR1 v1002 just before the holidays, but hadn't even had a chance to turn it on until today. Got it powered up, got into the web admin page from IEv6, got to the firmware page, hit Apply, and 2 minutes later I was up and running under v1008. Tweaked the Advanced/Performance settings as described in another post, turned off the wireless. Been running like a champ with 1 bar signal strength on a KPC650. Slow, but works. since I'm looking to use this for a corporation, I had to try VPN access. Tried it first with IPSec over TCP on port 10000 as that seemed to work for others, using Cisco VPN client v4.6.04.0043. Worked fine. Changed the connect to IPSec over UDP, and that worked too!! Got into my company resources over a secure channel via the KR1. I have a lot more to test, but I need to get to somewhere with a better signal strength.

There may be hope yet.... A BIG thanks to everyone who posted their thoughts here. Made my life a lot easier.

I purchased a KR1 several weeks ago upgraded to RK-1008 today with no problems. However, I ran a port scan afterward and discovered that Port 80 is open and unsecure on both my client computers. Windows firewall is enabled and I have Norton Systemworks on both machines. I had run a port scan prior to the installation on both machines and the port was closed but unsecure. Now it is open and unsecure. Does anyone else have this issue?

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Please define what you mean by, "unsecure." It would also be helpful to know what port scanning tool you used. If you use one of the free port scan tools (like Shields Up) and it reports this, you most likely do not have a real security issue on your computers inside the LAN.

KR1 is a router with a firewall built in. Any traffic that is addressed to the public IP your EVDO device receives while it is used with KR1 is passed through that firewall before being routed to its final destination. KR1 responds to pings by default and if you have enabled remote administration on port 80 it will respond to that as well. This means that the router's ports are open and not that the ports are open on any LAN node.

Moreover, as a firewall, KR1 will drop any unsolicited incoming traffic that does not have a specific pass rule written for it (applications, virtual server, or firewall). Any port scans you do from the Internet will concern the router only unless you have specific rules to allow traffic through on a given port range.

We had a major AT&T network failure this morning, so I put the KR1 into emergency service to get my boss on-line. I plugged him into a 100-base-T port on the KR1 and connected to our company using Cisco VPN, IPSEC over TCP. It's been running solid as a rock since 8:30 this morning. I had turned on the wireless, so I connected in via 802.11g and haven't had a single burp. We kept using the KR1 even after the net came back up, just to see how it will perform when it goes into the field.

I guess I must just be the odd guy out. I can't seem to break it.....

Thanks for your reply. I used Shields Up, hackerwatch.org and the Symantec online Security Check, all of which reported that Port 80 was open. Hackerwatch used the term "Open and Unsecure".

I understand and appreciate your information regarding the firewall role of the KR-1. Aside from the free port scan tools, is there a way to actually verify that the firewall is properly functioning and that there are no security concerns on my client computer downstream from the router?

You can always hook up your computers directly to the Internet via the EVDO device and try the port scan. That should give you a fairly accurate representation of how your individual machines respond to port scans and pings.

UPDATE ON THE KR1 UPGRADING and "UNBRICKING" PROCESS

Kyocera's official word is that the KR1 recovery process only works with Windows and Internet Explorer (based on how the information was conveyed, we take this to mean Windows XP SP2 with IE v6.0.2900..., until we can receive further clarification). They are indicating that Firefox/Safari/Camino/Opera/Conquerer, etc, will not work. As well, this hints that consistently successful UPGRADES will only work with a Windows computer and Internet Explorer version 6.

(note to Mac users: Booster-Antenna.com can provide a KR1 that has already had the upgrade applied, or if you bought your KR1 from our store, use one of our upgrade services: (mail-in or advanced)

As of Feb 9th, 2007, Kyocera's seven-page firmware upgrade document does not warn against platform or browser type/version issues, even though these may appear to exist (and even though the document itself has a screen shot depicting the FireFox button bar).

They also fail to suggest that there is a need to remove the EVDO data device BEFORE attempting to upgrade. That is an important step everyone should take.

Kyocera's online document covering the recovery process does not yet reflect any of these new methods/policies either, as they include information for setting up your Mac to do the recovery process (Macs don't have Internet Explorer version 6): "Note: This procedure varies depending on your operating system. Please reference sections for Windows XP, Windows 2000, or MAC, as applicable."

Other items worth mentioning:

Only attempt the recovery process with your EVDO PC Card or USB modem/tethered phone REMOVED from the device (unplug the device prior to powering up the KR1).

Make sure the Ethernet cable is NOT plugged between the KR1 and computer at the time you power on the KR1.

AFTER the KR1 is powered on, and the computer has been set to the 192.168.0.2 static IP settings, and the subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0 and the gateway is set to 192.168.0.1, THEN plug in the Ethernet cable between the two.

Do not close browser, open new browser windows, run apps, etc. while the process is taking place.

Make sure you wait TEN minutes BEFORE you remove the power cable from the KR1.

If it appears that the recovery process was successful, RESET the KR1 back to factory default settings prior to doing anything further.

Been running KR1 since Apr 06 with S620, currently with RK 1006 on Sprint getting 1.2 Mbs down, 90Kbs up.

Purchased S720 to take advantage of Rev A. The KR1 only works using RK 1006 with 720. Tried both RK 1007 and 1008. Each time the Status and WAN leds failed to show. Browser page did display correctly the S720, however the KR1 does not function. I have read all of the posts. I also called Kyocera/Dlink and spoke with a "tech", he was of no help. (the S720 has the latest Sprint firmware)

Finally, now with the S720 using RK1006 getting about 500Kbs down, 300Kbs up. So I am disappointed with performance and the fact that I can't get the KR1 RK1008 firmware to work.

Any ideas are appreciated.
