I'm concerned that if I buy the U720 that its Rev A performance will be inferior to that of the S720 and other Rev A non-USB adapters.

I would be interested in knowing how it compares both on PCs and on Macs.

From my tests, the U720 is just as fast as all the PC Data cards and ExpressCards for Rev.0, that is a good sign. In fact I'm surprised by the low latency and overall stability, considering that its a USB device.

We will eventually post comparison speed tests from EVDO Rev.A areas.

Device detection, interface polling latency, throughput and radio latency all look good so far.

Is the latency higher or lower normally with the u720 compared to the s720 on Rev 0?

I'm looking forward to that review in Rev A areas especially the latency compared to that of the s720. This device has been a long wait for many of us.

I just got my U720 and did a speed test on my Q1 Pentium without the Y cable installed. The Y cable won't work on my Q1 unless I get an extension so I have to do a speed test with it at a later time.

By the way, I'm in North Orange County, CA.

Those are some nice results, RJJc99. What's the latency? (I prefer ping plotter for finding latency).

Kane, what is your situation, exactly? Are you going to be using this with a desktop, laptop, or both? Also, do you plan on sharing the connection? If so, do you want QoS, or could you really care less?

Latency on the runs were 151 ms on the low side and 231 on the high side.

Give me the link to your preferred speed test and I'll run it when I get the extension for the Y cable. This is one of the times when I wished my Q1 had USB ports on the same side. **EDIT** Oops, I meant ping plotter. I'm not familiar with it. **EDIT**

just Google ping plotter, and you should find it.

As for places to ping? Try www.google.com and www.yahoo.com

Or you could try good old Command Prompt...just type in "Ping xxxxx"

Well

I have a KR1 and a S620 and am looking to upgrade as im almost out of my contract (short term for more$$)

I'm looking for speed, I have heard rumors that the new 720 devices do better then the old 620 even in REV 0 areas most of the time.

I might be moving to a full REV A area, however I want to know which is better both in MS Ping, as WELL as DL VS UL, as well as should i use the KR1 (pending better firmware as they are currently lacking) or just go with a USB and External Antenna situation.

PostPosted: Tue Dec 12, 2006 7:48 pm    Post subject: Rev0 Comparison Reply with quote

EDIT: My bad--I see the thread title references revA performance of the subject devices and I've compared rev0...

First post here (longtime lurker) but I can speak directly to this subject. I had a S720 for almost a month and just swapped it for a U720. Summary of appx. results in good rev0 coverage (west side Indianapolis) in my home office which is a bit of a "RF hellhole":

S720:

At about -92dBm I saw consistent good speeds of ~850kpbs down and 100kpbs up. Of course there's nothing I could have done short of an external antenna to improve this. Impressive nonetheless, even though we don't have revA here yet.

U720:

Plugged directly into USB port signal was lower at about -95dBm with an initially disappointing corollary drop in performance to ~650kbps down and similar 100kbps up.

Here's the striking news--plugged into "Y" cable and elevated about a foot above desktop and about two feet from the PC (an HP NW9440 workstation laptop) signal now hovers near -80dBm and I've seen 1200 to 1550kbps down and about 110kpbs up consistently.

Ping times haven't shown much of a trend in all cases being 150 to 300ms.

This is performance I would characterize as "phenomenal" in rev0 coverage at such a relatively low signal. I'm not sure what to look forward to when revA does arrive.

I was a bit worried about the loss of convenience vs. a PC card, but we have desktops and another Dell laptop here with an ExpressCard slot and the boost in performance and wider compatibility seem well worth the trouble.

Couldn't resist:

I didn't attach a screen capture showing it's rev0, but I guess we've heard if revA was here by now Wink

DO NOT BE SORRY even if the thread says REV A the fact that I have full REV 0 Signal where i live and don't get half that really speaks about the improvements.

Even when in a lappy i get about 56k on the up with ful 5 evdo bars..... down is only like 450k..... im getting my s620 replaced... if that doesn't work then on Friday im definitely ordering a U720 or S720 if anyone posts more comments. (I think I might go U720 and a booster antenna since the cost is about the same with the S720 alone)
