|
|
This thread if for success and failure related to the new RK1007 firmware for the KR1. All RK1007 updaters, please post your experiences with this update here, THANKS.
RK1007 firmware added support for a few Sprint phones (tethered via USB 'phone' port), and delt with a bug related to Sprint's Data Link service.
Note that this update does not add support for the Sprint Merlin S720 Rev.A capable EVDO card. Some users have mentioned noticing slighter better speed with the S720, yet reduced stability (connection slows down or drops).
We're informed that the next coming firmware, RK1008 will formally add Merlin S720 support.
One thing I noticed about the RK1007 firmware is that it dropped support for DynDNS.org, yet still has EasyDns.com. Was that an oversight or something done on purpose, Mackieman? |

Upgrade successful, however stability issues out the arse hole...
drops as in the router drops..... keeps droping connection on my s620....
I read that if you get a KR1 from the factory with RK1006 then upgrade to 1007 it works nicely, maybe thats my problem mine came 1002 upgraded to 1006 now 1007...
should i get mine exchanged... this is ridiculous...

That is a happy coincidence. There is no difference in hardware, just the firmware. After an RK1006 upgrade, if the unit is set to factory defaults, you have the same thing as if you purchased a new-in-box unit with RK1006.
EVDO card model and firmware, carrier, and usage area all come into play too, when it comes to connection stability.
If you see worse functionality or stability with RK1007, then downgrade back to RK1006 and wait for the future RK1008 update. |

Note that there have been some posts and customers calling our tech line that have experienced firmware issues with older Sprint cards now that the Rev.A update is unfolding.
It may be hard to predict how everything is effected due to the Rev.A upgrade taking place. Changing EVDO card firmware to account for network updates may impact the KR1's stability when used with a particular card. |

Scott,
In relation to the crashes im having that you said couldn't be affected by my hardware since its all the same. HOWEVER
Quoting you:
"That is a happy coincidence. There is no difference in hardware, just the firmware. After an RK1006 upgrade, if the unit is set to factory defaults, you have the same thing as if you purchased a new-in-box unit with RK1006.
NIX CARD INFO

However searching your forums I see that new routers are perfectly stable and have little problems besides the oblivious bugs but not the crashing i have had problems with, now i read a topic on the first page where someone Foiled (*Snicker) there KR1 and it works fine no problems just like the new ones, im going to Foil my KR1 and see if it works IF IT DOES then that means that something has changed since its launch (maybe not spec wise but quality component wise)

| Upgrade to RK1007 did not go well, bricked the router and after many hours finally got it to load with RK1007 (no Thanks to Kyocera Tech Support, after an hour it was send it back), same issues that I've seen with upgrades in previous posts, seems they still have conflicts with differnet OS's, Web Browers and applications loaded on a given PC that conflict with the upgrade, I tried 3 different PC's before I could get the upgrade to complete, okay so now it's updated but a very big disappointment to see the Sprint & Verizon XV6700 PDA is still not supported, the KR1 see's the device but still cannot make a call using WINModem teathered to the KR1, I'm being told Kyocera will not support the XV6700, which I don't understand as the device uses Dial up networking like many others and it should be very easy to develope drivers for this, seems they already have the USB drivers in place as the router see's the device. Great product which I'm sure many would buy if it supported more USB teathered devices, time to look for other solutions as I don't think Kyocera cares about us that teather or use USB type devices, I've used the KR1 with EV-D0 cards with good results, but it doesn't solve my problem..... |

UPDATE ON THE KR1 UPGRADING and "UNBRICKING" PROCESS
Kyocera's official word is that the KR1 recovery process only works with Windows and Internet Explorer (based on how the information was conveyed, we take this to mean Windows XP SP2 with IE v6.0.2900..., until we can receive further clarification). They are indicating that Firefox/Safari/Camino/Opera/Conquerer, etc, will not work. As well, this hints that consistently successful UPGRADES will only work with a Windows computer and Internet Explorer version 6.
(note to Mac users: Booster-Antenna.com can provide a KR1 that has already had the upgrade applied, or if you bought your KR1 from our store, use one of our upgrade services: (mail-in or advanced)
As of Feb 9th, 2007, Kyocera's seven-page firmware upgrade document does not warn against platform or browser type/version issues, even though these may appear to exist (and even though the document itself has a screen shot depicting the FireFox button bar).
They also fail to suggest that there is a need to remove the EVDO data device BEFORE attempting to upgrade. That is an important step everyone should take.
Kyocera's online document covering the recovery process does not yet reflect any of these new methods/policies either, as they include information for setting up your Mac to do the recovery process (Macs don't have Internet Explorer version 6): "Note: This procedure varies depending on your operating system. Please reference sections for Windows XP, Windows 2000, or MAC, as applicable."
Other items worth mentioning:
Only attempt the recovery process with your EVDO PC Card or USB modem/tethered phone REMOVED from the device (unplug the device prior to powering up the KR1).
Make sure the Ethernet cable is NOT plugged between the KR1 and computer at the time you power on the KR1.
AFTER the KR1 is powered on, and the computer has been set to the 192.168.0.2 static IP settings, and the subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0 and the gateway is set to 192.168.0.1, THEN plug in the Ethernet cable between the two.
Do not close browser, open new browser windows, run apps, etc. while the process is taking place.
Make sure you wait TEN minutes BEFORE you remove the power cable from the KR1.
If it appears that the recovery process was successful, RESET the KR1 back to factory default settings prior to doing anything further. |
