So, I get this post card in the mail saying that I need to upgrade the firmware in my V620 or I won't be able to connect come February '07. (This also applies to the Kyocera KPC650, Audiovox XV6600 with Camera, and the XV6600 without the Camera). Has anyone done this upgrade yet?

Here's the link on VZW's website:

http://support.vzw.com/how_to_use/bba_device_update.html

I wonder if this is the Revision A I've been reading about?

BroadbandAccess Device Update

As part of our continued efforts to bring you the best service possible, we will begin upgrading our high-speed wireless broadband network in February 2007. In order to continue to enjoy all the great benefits of BroadbandAccess, customers with affected PC Cards and PDAs will need to download the appropriate software upgrade. Without this important software upgrade, your PC Card or PDA will no longer be able to connect to BroadbandAccess effective February 2007. Please read the following information to see if your PC Card or PDA requires an update.

Firmware Versions Required: If your device is listed below and does not have the firmware listed, you will need to follow the instructions to update the firmware.

* Kyocera KPC 650
o Version CG 1.0.06
* Verizon Wireless V620
o Version M6500 C-BBIRD_VZW_PCCARD-40306.156
-OR-
o Version M6500C-BBIRD-40304.135
* Verizon Wireless XV6600 with Camera
o Version CE:2.07.00 HA01_167/2.07.111
* Verizon Wireless XV6600 without Camera
o Version CE:2.07.00 HA01_167/2.07.112

MACINTOSH
Please note that PC cards with VZAccess Manager Software for Mac OSX were shipped with the upgraded firmware.

Since, the Macs have been shipping with VZAccess Manager for almost a year now, this seems like it will not affect too many users. Also, the newer V640 ExpressCard isn't affected.

HOWEVER, it looks like the PC5220 card isn't listed, so when Verizon moves to Rev A, it looks like that card will not be supported (that card hasn't been sold since July 2005).

Well then.... I guess this IS the Rev A upgrade I've been reading about. I wonder if the upload/download speeds will increase? Hope so.

The updates are for compatibility, whatever the case.

None of the devices mentioned will suddenly go faster if it *is* related to Rev.A, since those devices only have Rev.0 chipsets. They'll be backwards compatible though, and perhaps perform a little better.

Reading between the lines, it seems clear that a major network upgrade is coming, which should definitely mean Rev-A. Though it seems curious to me, that they leave it up to one's imagination in that announcement instead of clearly saying "Our Rev-A Network Launches February 2007".

Regardless, the folks who do need to upgrade their firmware on existing cards, need to do so for compatibility with whatever the upgraded network provides. It does NOT mean that the upgraded devices will be able to take advantage of faster Rev-A speeds.

As I understand it, devices need to have specific Rev-A chipsets in order to attain Rev-A speeds, and NONE of Verizon's current (or past) devices have the right chipset.

Verizon is going to have to announce and sell a whole new line of Rev-A devices in conjunction with their Rev-A network rollout, whenever that happens.

Well maybe this is precisely why they are not telling the existing customers that they are rolling out Rev A - because they have incompatible hardware and might demand Verizon to let them upgrade to a card that supports EVDO. So they are basically telling existing customers to upgrade the firmware to help Verizon facilitate their EVDO Rev A roll out. I'd be pretty upset if I spent $ on a non REV A card with Verizon over the last several months and locked myself into a 2 year commitment when it appears they will have cars that support Rev A within the next couple of months.

I just found this thread but it bears directly with my latest experience with V broadband support.

See: "EVDO tower goes south for 6 hours & V refuse to believe" also in this forum

A thread that ran through their efforts to get me back on broadband with my KPC650 was checking to see if I had the latest version of VZAcess. One tech went as far as saying

"They are upgrading the equipment in your area and your computer might not work with the old version if this site is involved."

Sorry I don't remember my firmware versions and right now the KPC650 is in my KR1 and I don't know how to check version info through the KR1 interface

Steve.

Actually, the devices that they are telling people will need to be upgraded, are from over 14 months ago. So, this doesn't affect current users. Perhaps we will find out more about the reasons behind this over the next few months. Perhaps these changes are needed to provide a better RevA performance for all?

How is this likely to affect the usefullness of my old 5740 card, which is not on the update list? Will it *really* not work after the revision?
And how can I find out about previous updates, if any? As far as I know mine's never been updated in any way.
Thank you!

Verizon wireless is not well in control of this update, however. At least a few of the links on this site are flat busted.

Anyone who has an older Audiovox XV6600 unit won't be able to update, as their links to the UTStarcom website are completely worthless.

UTStarcom bought out the Audiovox cellular division, and I haven't been able to find a live link to UTStarcom since.

Anyone know where UTStarcom went?

i did the rom upgrade for the xv6600wc and it completely blew out my phone and end button mappings.. but i was seeing an EVDO icon, and i wasnt aware of the evdo service around here yet. so i downgraded the rom, got my buttons fixed and i still have an evdo icon.. must be good news.

anyways, i think they removed the rom upgrade for a reason. but its been out on the pdaphonehome board for a while now.

I have found 2 pages with active links for the firmware:

http://kb.pcsintel.com/index.php?title=UTStarcom_(Verizon)#HTC_XV6600

http://kb.pcsintel.com/index.php?title=Firmware_Tracker

Here are a few direct links:
XV6600(wc)
http://www.utstar.com/pcd/downloads/HA_VZW_207_111_01151_SHIP1.exe
http://www.utstar.com/pcd/downloads/HA_VZW_207_111_01167_A12.exe

XV6600WOC
http://www.utstar.com/pcd/downloads/HA_VZW_207_112_01151_SHIP1.exe
http://www.utstar.com/pcd/downloads/HA_VZW_207_112_01167_A12.exe

I assume the A12 version is a little newer than the SHIP1 due to the 01167 vs. 01151 at the end.

Has anyone tried or compared these two? The last thing I need to do is be locked out of EVDO access or kill my device. Button mappings is not that big of a deal is it? Easy to go in and set them again, right?

Also, a more direct page at UTStarcom for downloads:
http://www.utstar.com/pcd/Downloads.aspx

Select the model in the upper-left to get the right downloads.

Good news. We found out from our contacts at Verizon, that the PC5220 and the PC5740 will *not* require a firmware upgrade and they will work just fine.
