5/4/2007 - The Novatel U720, USB720 Is Now Fully Compatible with the KR1 running firmware RK1010.

More info at:

Kyocera KR1 Now Supports More EVDO Rev A Devices - EVDOinfo.com

The current KR1 with latest firmware works with both Sprint's Novatel U720 and Verizon's USB720

There is a performance issue though. We are not seeing full speed, the top speed is 450Kbps - 500kbps.

More information will be posted to this thread as it becomes available.

We tested KR1 firmware version RK1008 with both the Sprint U720 and the Verizon USB720 and they work!

Neither are officially supported by Kyocera, but in our testing they did work.

There is definitely a performance hit, since we were unable to achieve speeds greater than 500Kbps downloads, and we were able to go faster when the devices were plugged directly into our laptop.

However, a USB EVDO Modem plus a Router is a killer combination and the KR1 is the only router that has a USB port!

Michael,

QUESTION

U720, Y-Cable and the KR1, it has 2 USB ports.

PLEASE TEST IT AND LET US KNOW. This might rock my order as I am looking at the S720 but would like the U720.

The 2nd port, looks like a USB port, but it is called a "Debug" port, it isn't a standard USB port and there is no power on it. I just tested by plugging in the Y Adapter to the U720 into the debug port, the U720 never gets power. If I switch to the "Phone" port, it gets power - so the Y cable will not get any additional power from the debug port.

My KR1 only has one USB port? There seems to be a blank or something next to it but it definitely is NOT another USB port.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding . . . . . . .

If you remove the "stub" between the "Phone In" and Ethernet Port 4, you will reveal the "Debug" port - which isn't a USB port.

FYI, the Cable and U720 do plug into the "Phone In" and work.

Michael,

Question, I have moded many USB ports (due to my love of my PDA the CLIE UX50), question, possible to also provide power to the Debug port? like wire it from the same source of the phone port????

This would be a very desirable mod if it will allow me to use the Y-Cable to gain distance then add a Booster-Antanna

Is there a firmware upgrade or other fix in the works to fix performance problem with the KR1-U720? Wish I had seen this before I ordered. Makes a big difference.

Hello,

I'm going out tomorrow to get a new soldering iron. From what I can tell making the DEBUG USB port powered is not going to be that hard, need a good wire and some patience with a soldering iron.

I will post PICS and results here, (will plug in my old USB moded Clie UX50 to verify it is putting out power)

*may take 1-2 days family stuff comes first Razz

Any updates as to when (or if) Kyocera plans to release a firmware upgrade that will add support of the U720 for the KR1? It is indeed great that it works at all but would be REALLY great if using it included getting the same 1500 dl and 130 ul I'm getting running the U720 straight through either my laptop or desktop.

Also, is there any recent word as to when or if Kyocera plans to add support for more EV enabled phones tethered to the USB port?

Hi,
I am also interested in when or if the KR1 will support the U720. Does anyone have any information on when or if the KR1 will support the U720?

Thanks

I just got a couple of the U720 devices. This would be the point where I make an ominous and non-binding statement about support for the U720 in KR1 coming, "soon."
