|

Just received my brand new KR1 (from boster-antenna) and connected it up and installed the latest firmware. Plugged in my Sprint EVDO card (Air Card 580) and it connected.
Whilst connected via Ethernet I get the following leds
Power / Status - both green and steady
WLAN - rythmic flashing green
WAN - alternates between steady green and rythmic flashing green
Ethernet port - flashing with traffic
Phone - not lit
When I run Konst Pinger (continuous ping) I get approx 50% packet loss regardless of which server I ping.
When I connect to the Wireless Lan it gets even worse - although I am shown as connected at 54mbps I get a 50% drop off of pings to 192.168.0.1 and can't connect to the config page reliably (I could connect OK prior to the firmware upgrade obviously).
I can connect to my other DSL Wireless router ok and if I put the EVDO card in the laptop I get connected with no problem.
Is the KR1 just a piece of junk or is it just me?

OK, I'm fairly certain it's the Wireless Lan that is at fault
Can anyone tell me whether, during normal use, your WLAN led is lit and whether it's steady green or whether it flashes slowly?
Thanks |

steveclv,
A couple of things. First I have been reading in these forums that the s720 has speed issues with the KR1, there is a known post on it, search it out if you have that card.
If you don't have that card, I also read another post just yesterday in these forums that disabling the wireless fixed a person's problem with the KR1. So I think you are on the right track. Search the forum out the answers are in here.
Wish I had the threads handy but i don't.
I don't own a KR1, I just ordered the Linksys tonight. So I am afraid I can't offer anymore advice than that.
Good luck with it!

| The A580 is an older card with some RF leakage issues. Most likely, the spurious emissions are causing the WiFi radio to overload and reset. You can try using an external antenna on the EVDO card (if available) or disabling WiFi all together. |

I haven't received any emails back from Support Michael, I resent the message just now and asked them to cc the reply to my Hotmail account.
I don't have an external antenna for the Aircard 580 and disabling the WiFi isn't an option as that's why I purchased the KR1. The 580 is shown as being compatible so surely whoever made the router must have tested it with them?
I'll look for the reply in the morning - I'm just getting desperate as I need this working for my trip on Sunday. |

Did some more testing tonite
Disabled WiFi and connect using Ethernet and it worked perfectly - no dropped Pings and fast EVDO speeds
Removed the EVDO card and connected using WiFi - no dropped pings and fast connection to the router.
Installed EVDO card and connected using WiFi - dropped 60% of pings to external web sites and 30% of pings to 192.168.0.1
It just ain't working for me and I don't know if it is this particular router or all KR1s.
If it's the AC580 that's causing the problem then I'll have to find another router as I'm stuck with this card for the next 18 contract months (and it works perfectly in the laptop) |

I'm beginning to feel like a D-Link sales guy. (No Affiliation)
I have the same issue where the KR1 WiFi gets wiped out when using the EVDO. Silly Huh? I resorted to turning the KR1 WiFi off and plugging in a D-Link Pocket Router to provide WiFi. It works great...very small and powers off the KR1 USB port. It's a drag that you need to buy an external solution but it does fix the issue.
Good Luck...Brad |

Steve,
The following is a cc of the support e-mail sent to you:
Packet loss such as this it typical of card leakage issues. Not so much the KR1 as RF design and shielding on specific cards. We see this often on PC5220 EVDO cards and occasionally on AirCard 580 EVDO cards. What card are you using?
Second cause of packet loss is environmental: RFI and EMI 'noise' from nearby hardware devices, other Wi-Fi access points and especially cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.
There obviously can be hardware issues with the KR1 leading to packet loss as well (typically Wi-Fi is VERY weak or completely drops out).
Tips and tricks:
Make certain clients are using Microsoft XP's built in Wi-Fi configuration tools (or OS X's if using Macs). Third-party configuration apps (Dell Truemobile, Intel, HP, Sony or Linksys/Netgear) can also lead to Wi-Fi drops or an inability to "see" the KR1 for some reason. Note, if you're a Verizon customer using the Verizon VZAccess Manager's default install settings, it will become the Wi-Fi 'manager' and may lead to issues.
Reset the device to factory defaults.
Manually configure the KR1 instead of using the wizard.
Consider updating to RK1006 firmware if you have not (you MUST reset to factory defaults AFTER any firmware updates). This can make Wi-Fi issues worse though, so be prepared to step back to RK1002 firmware if needed.
If you have cordless phones, try setting KR1 Wi-Fi manually to channel 11 or 1.
Should the issue persist, call our tech line and we can start a warranty replacement through Kyocera: (847) 462-4004 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. CST.

Steve,
I activated an AirCard 580 and tested it on one of our KR1s (was running RK1006) and it worked perfectly, 0% packet loss, no problems.
Check out what Scott suggested.
Contact our support guys if there continues to be problems, as we can swap the KR1 that you have for the one that I tested. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

This may be irrelevent, but it is knowledge hard won.
Back in the days of 56K modems when you could change settings, choose longwided strings, etc. nightmares were quite common. I typically spent several hours trying to get something to work. So did another consultant. Being an observer, I noticed that after giving up in disgust, turning off the modem and my Mac and going to dinner, when I came back the modem worked just fine. A little reading showed me that when the modem was turned off and then on again, it reset itself to the factory defaults erasing all the garbage I was creating but which would be remembered as long as the power was on.
When I referenced my finding to the other consultant, he began laughing and learned a little bit at the same time.
So, try once in awhile, shutting EVERYTHING off and wait a few minutes and then turn it back on. Works great with cable and a router... |

Just a final update
Returned the KR1 and swapped it for a Linksys and most problems went away. We believe that there was some sort of interference generated by the Aircard 580 that prevented the KR1 from working with both Wireless and EVDO concurrently. May just be my 580 but worth bearing this in mind if you are considering a KR1 and you run a Sierra Wireless Sprint AC580 card.
Downside to the Linksys is that it doesn't come with a auto adaptor but I use a power invertor when travelling instead and that works fine.
I am now a much happier bunny |

I still suffer from dropped cell and wifi connections from no apparant reason. The KR1 router will work fine one day, then the next day I have to constantly repower. I did notice one thing important. There are far fewer disconnects when NOT connected to any type of UPS supply. With just a regular electric line and surge protector there are fewer dropouts.
