Sorry if this is obvious but...
Let's say I'm running my personal laptop off my KR1 via Ethernet cord. I activate WiFi with password (WPA in my case) and make it available to some other people.
Does the "firewall function" in the KR1 protect my Ethernet-connected PC from any attacks from those WiFi-connected PCs? Or for that matter another Ethernet-connected PC off of my KR1?
In essence, I need to know if it's relatively safe to let people I don't necessarily trust 100% share my connection.
(And yeah, I realize that they might go hog-wild on bandwidth and screw me that way, that's a different subject. This is mostly in situations "out in the boonies" where I'm on NationalAccess and there's limits on what they can do to my monthly totals regardless...)
I'm on the 1006 firmware, WiFi with WPA is definately live, I'm just lovin'* this thing... |

The KR1's firewall is between the "outside world" and the "internal" (LAN/WLAN-based) computers. So no, unless you use firewall software on your computer there is no security preventing/limiting some kind of access to running services on the "inside".
Note that both OS X and Windows XP include firewalls that help prevent other computers connecting to yours.
Still, any computer sharing your local network could look at or capture packet traffic thus snooping on any non-secured website activity, non-secured e-mail access, etc. |

| I see. OK, thanks. I'm running Ubuntu "Dapper" but I can get a software firewall going. |

The real question would be WHY ???? would you wish to run the wifi link off your internal wifi application on your computer instead of just letting those you wish to give access have direct access to the wifi from the KR1 router like it is designed to do (as a hotspot). That way the other users don't access your computer but do share your connection and the router acts as a firewall between the internet and you as well as between you and those other users.
If you are going to share your connection via internal wifi then you don't need the KR1 at all.

You misunderstand. My laptop has no WiFi whatsoever. I mean none. I'm talking about a situation where I get the KR1's EVDO input off of Ethernet, somebody else gets it off of WiFi. The only connection between the PCs on the KR1's WiFi signal and my laptop is the KR1 itself.
You assumed my laptop has WiFi and I was sharing it. Uhuh. |

Yes, I did assume your pc was wifi enabled. The simplest solution for you might be to pick up a wifi card for your pc. They're only $15 to $45 and available from many sources as either pcmcia or usb. Then you'll be just another one sharing the hotspot and the KR1 will be your firewall between you and all else.

Two issues: WiFi under Ubuntu can be annoying...but more importantly, I deal with very high security stuff and most of the time run my KR1 with WiFi turned off.
Google "Jim March" with "Diebold" if you think I'm paranoid . |
