An interesting article on CNN today, that talks about security at public hotspots. People using EVDO do not have this problem, but I imagine that many people up here use both.
| Quote: | At any point in time, I can reach out and touch everyone's laptop at the hot spot, and there's usually not any way of preventing that -- from me touching and looking at other people's stuff at the hot spot itself,"
For example, he said, a hacker could be sitting around the corner sending out a wireless signal. It may look like a legitimate one, even offering people a chance to sign up for service. But if you log on, the hacker then would have complete access to your machine. |

must have been a slow news night.
of course there is a way to stop it.
dont share your folders.
dont go to his bogus web site that he mentions.
use a vpn product to tunnel to a known secure network.
etc etc
basically just practice safe computing.
I DO use hotspots and I ALLWAYS VPN to my own server, in fact, even when I am on EVDO. |

I think one of the things of interest (and easy to do), would be the hacker sitting @ the hotspt, looking like everyone else, but their laptop is configured as an ad-hoc WiFi base station and it is named something similar to the location you are at (e.g. JoesCoffeeShop), you connect thinking it is OK and you are connecting via this guy's laptop. Of course, there are things you can do to make things more secure, I am guessing that most don't.
Of course, this is not possible on an EVDO connection, the stream is encrypted and you are much safer. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |
