Has anyone used the Digital 489 dual band yagi antenna? I am looking for a higher quality yagi for a fixed location and don't mind spending more ($200) if it's really a better product.
I'm currently using a trucker with low loss cable (30 ft) but would like to try a yagi due to some problems with the trucker. |

| Yes, we've used it. A little higher latency and weaker transmit power than the fixed-signal yagi antennas, but not too bad. |

Scott, I'm using a * trucker and 9913 cable that's about 5 months old. I have checked cable for shorts or open circuits and it seems ok. Likewise with the trucker I found no shorts and got continuity from appropriate parts of antenna to the tnc connector. I have also replaced connectors on the cables.
Right now with this setup I am showing a signal strength of 70% and the RSSI is -86 dBm. Other times I can't get an evdo signal and go back to 1x. It's really been hard to establish any pattern. Most times I can get a connection to evdo by swaping to a window mount antenna at the amp rather than the roof mount.
I checked with Alltel and I am about 2 miles from the evdo tower (They also confirmed my connection to that tower while on the phone).
All this sounds like an intermittent cable or antenna problem so I figured I would just change out the whole thing and upgrade to a better antenna/cable.
I know a dual band yagi is somewhat of a compromise compared to a single band yagi but didn't know how it might perform in place of a trucker. |

Thanks for sharing your antenna info JT (somehow I sense that I've just been baited into a "commercial").
Perhaps everything you bought to increase signal is merely "defective". Manufacturing defects do happen from time to time.
Then again, maybe you've unfortunately bought products that don't work well because the vendor misrepresented the device specifications or capabilities.
Or its solar flares. I hate solar flares. :] |

max signal,
thanks, I will do some further testing and try to pinpoint problem. I certainly am not at this point claiming any product defect and would rather be sure before returning antenna and wasting your time.
I still am interested in trying a yagi though.
Hey maybe it is solar flares:) |

Well, you're close enough, not counting for topography/elevation and major obstructions. One often overlooked issue: moisture contamination in the connections due to improper termination and/or use of the wrong connectors on the coax, or poor weatherization.
This following thread is a basic synopsis of our findings and choices regarding antennas and cable. If we DON'T carry a product, there is a GOOD reason. :] http://www.evdoforums.com/thread3136.html |

For the past few weeks I have been operating with the amp and stick on window antenna at my fixed location. The service has been very consistent with download speeds of 500-900 kb/s.
I did try connecting the trucker antenna directly to the amp but could not consistantly get an evdo signal. I also changed the tnc connector on the trucker cable thinking it might be a problem due to previous outside exposure but still had same result.
I have checked ohm reading from base of antenna to cable jacket and center cable lead to antenna tip and have continuity. I have no reading (open) across antenna leads.
What are the failure possibilities of an antenna if you have no cable issues? |
