Verizon announced the Samsung i730 today, the dates above were correct. You can read about it here:

Phonescoop.com claims blackberry e-mail support, verizon's official sources don't mention this (because they like to pimp their own wireless sync, probably)...

Still hoping to get a clarification on this. It's not as though anyone else has the i730 yet.

According to Engadget, the i730 is now available to consumers as well. They mention that it's about 10 days sooner than they were expecting it to be.

$599.99 with 2 year contract...

They are on eBay as well, but prices are WAY high. My VZW corporate account rep is working with me to get one at the corporate rate, an I may have it by week's end if the current $100 instant rebate expires on the 30th. He also let me know about the new bundles: 450 voice + unlimited data for $79.99, and on up.

1. Has anyone stubled across information regarding whether or not the i730 can be used as a "portable wifi hotspot", similar to using Internet Connection Sharing on Win 2K/XP?

2. Can it be used as a phone w/o losing/pausing the EV-DO connection?

There is a Dormant Killer URL (basically a meta refresh of a page every 20 seconds), that causes the EVDO device from NOT going into dormant more, more info here:

http://www.evdoinfo.com/Tips/PC_5220/Dormant_Connection_Killer_2005021218/

It works on a XV6600 (I have one), since the XV6600 supports JavaScript Meta Refresh. Should work on the i730 as well.

Not sure about the other part of your question, I haven't tried that yet.

You get WiFi or EVDO but not both, according to this. FAQ's available at the VZW site (Mobile Professional section, took some looking!), as well as the phone.

hmm, on second read, the url does not indicate if that's a software or hardware limitation. they could simply be giving the "simple" answer for standard users that doesn't go into why they only allow one on vs. the other (could be as simple as keeping the in-device routing somewhat simple).

if it's locked down entirely (due to verizon policy, or hardware requirements), , that's disappointing. there might be a evdo<->bluetooth sharing option, but that's limited range, one-to-one and capped at speeds below EVDO's max.

I've asked our corporate account rep about the WiFi issue. He's checking. Bruce

So I'm ready to order this thing. Can I use an existing # or do I have to get a new one? Any idea if I can have two cell phone #'s, one for work, one for home, and the data package????

My bet: You can either move your existing number or get a new one. You will have one number for the PDA/phone, and it'd connect to voice and data. You can have as many numbers as you need, but each number goes with a device (phone or EVDO card). I have one number for the PC 5220 card and one for my existing phone, but will cancel one of them when I get the i730 (I think).

But better ask 'em.

Two lines in one phone, plus data! Wow, guess that seals it for me too. Just waiting for my last contract to wind down so I am not killed by cancellation fees. Let us all know how the thing works out.

Yes on the pc use of data. She said to call back after I have tried if I need help. Bye Bye Comcost. Not the same as cable, but I'm never at home anyway, why pay for comcast? Or should I not do it. Is it still safe to surf with this versus a hard connection?
