Samsung i730 (SCH-i730)

I don't have the i730 yet, so I was wondering if someone that does, can tell me if it has the same removable rubber stopper on the back (top near antenna), that reveals an external antenna connector.

For extra credit, can someone confirm if it is the same connector as the i700.

Do you have to pay extra for the extra phone #, like an extra plan or something?

You can use it as a modem by following these instructions (not supported by Verizon, per their tech dept.):

I just ordered my i730. I also found out some info from a verizon rep in the WDTS support (800-788-9387 option 2,2,2):
*22899 - sets prferred roaming with option 2
**7738 - gives you mode of connection, prv_is200 (cai version of it) - shows you what network you are in

Any other hacks, star codes or info that might be useful?

I am the dir. of tech @ our firm, and I really need a way to tunnel through our firewall securely (I can make all the appropriate rules) and be able to remote control (rdp?) computers from the i730 - any ideas?

Just set up my i730 as a modem, and it works like a champ! Copnnected at 230.4 K here in San Diego. Instructions on this site and the post at http://www.wmphones.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29 made it painless. I did have one glitch that I can's figure out yet. I was unable to save the password and ID for some reason. Must have missed something in the setup. Anyone help out on how to go back and save it in XP? Thanks, Bruce

I currently have a Verizon PC5220 phone-card, paying $79.99 for an unlimited data-plan. Very happy with it.

Now the i730 comes on the scene.

I just called Verizon, & they have a promotion going on:

$79.99 for unlimited data-plan, plus voice (450 min/month?)

[ you save $5. $45 for unlimited-data + $40 for voice = $85 ]

The phone is $649 for a 1-year contract, $599 for 2-year contract.

I think I would be better off in the long-run, by cancelling my PC5220 contract ($175 penalty), & signing up for $79.99/month for the i730. I could use the i730 as a dial-up modem with my PC laptop (over USB).

[ check out the test results..uploads are 112kbps??!! I can get 99k bps upload, on my PC5220..but then it goes down to 56kbps. I.e., dial-up upload speeds. Anyone know if the i730 does 112kbps uploads consistently? Or, is it going to be dialup speeds ]

Anyone else in the same situation I'm in?

I assume, I can sell my PC5200 phone-card..to offset the $175 cancellation penalty..right?

Well, I spoke too soon. I am now unable to connect using the i730 as a modem. I get a #692 error, modem failure. The modem shows up in the device manager list, but does not respond to a diagonstic query. I have reinstalled the driver package from Samsung and tried a couple of different cables (one to the cradle, one portable one I got via eBay), but indications are still the same. Modem is there, I can select it for the network connection, but it fails to respond.

Any one got any ideas on what I changed to cause this problem? I am thinking it is a setting in the phone?

Got the answer to the Error #692 probem from the nice folks at the WMPHONES forum. The phone needs to be disabled before using it as a modem, by disconnecting using the icon or hitting the "END" button several times. Solved the problem nicely. Thought I'd share it here in case others had experienced this problem too. Bruce

How's the battery life? I've been tempted to switch from Treo 650 to an EVDO PocketPC but battery life has never been good on PPC phones. Looks like it will take Palm a while to get an EVDO phone (next year), which makes PPC more attractive if they can get to an acceptable battery life.

I got a chance to play with this EVDO PPC phone with a horizontal slide keyboard, which is impressive... except the battery life is still not nearly as good as Treo 650.

Battery life is so-so. I am not an extremely heavy user, but do use the Wireless Sync feature, which gets a download of mail every 15 minutes or so. I use the standard battery and it'll go maybe a day and a half with my usage. It comes with a bigger battery too, which I have tried and it does extend it out. I did get a neat little USB cable for tethering to my laptop, and it also charges the phone, so that provides a way to top off at the office when away from the cradle at home. I never carry the OEM 110 Volt charger with me anywhere. I am pretty impressed with it so far, especially now that I cracked the code on the above mentioned error connecting. Ready to get rid of my PC 5220 card now! Bruce

Tempting. Now if it could allow talking on the phone at same time as doing bluetooth DUN to laptop! I suppose with a rigged VOIP, you could, but not yet on standard cell voice account.

This just in....

Verizon will offer a Samsung i730 based on Windows Mobile 5.0 during 1st qtr 2006, AND there will be an upgrade for current i730 customers, not sure if it will be a paid upgrade or free upgrade (I am guessing paid).
