Sprint (NYSE: S) today announced that it has upgraded the Sprint Power Vision Network(SM), the nation's largest wireless broadband network covering more than 164 million people, with the faster EV-DO Revision A technology in the San Diego market – making it the first market in the country to have the technology commercially available. With the upgraded mobile broadband network, customers in San Diego will ultimately be able to utilize richer applications and services such as high-speed video telephony, music on demand, video messaging and large file uploads.
San Diego is the first of 21 markets where Sprint will roll out EV-DO Revision A this year with coverage expected to reach more than 40 million people. Sprint Power Vision users in these markets should experience significantly faster average upload speeds of 300-400 kbps (compared with 50-70 kbps of current EV-DO networks). Average download speeds should also increase to 450–800 kbps from 400-700 kbps. By 3Q 2007, Sprint's Power Vision network is expected to be completely upgraded to the faster EV-DO Revision A.

"Sprint's mobile broadband leadership is unmatched. Not only do we have the largest mobile broadband network, but with the upgraded EV-DO Revision A technology Sprint Power Vision will also be the fastest wireless broadband network in the country," said Kathy Walker, chief network officer for Sprint. "The power of Sprint's networks, especially with this EV-DO Revision A upgrade, allows Sprint to deliver a mobile broadband experience to our customers that no other carrier can provide."
The upgrade to EV-DO Revision A is expected to further drive Sprint's industry-leading wireless data average revenue per user as customers will be able to use the upgraded network to utilize applications such as all IP video telephony, high-performance push-to-talk (walkie-talkie service), multi-user video conferencing, real-time gaming and video streaming of both content and live web cams simultaneously as they become available.
EV-DO Revision A coverage in most markets will initially be concentrated in airports and business districts where wireless data demand is highest and will expand to include Sprint's entire market footprint. Overall, Sprint plans to reach more than 200 million people in the U.S. with mobile broadband data services (including both EV-DO Revisions 0 and A) in 220 major metropolitan areas across the country with its Power Vision network by the end of 2006.
Sprint Mobile Broadband Cards
As Sprint continues to launch EV-DO Revision A service in markets across the country, it is also expanding its Revision A-capable device portfolio. In early November, Sprint will make its first mobile broadband USB modem available – the Sprint Mobile Broadband USB Modem by Novatel Wireless Ovation U720. This device plugs into the USB port of any compatible laptop and will allow customers to connect to the Sprint Power Vision Network and wirelessly access audio, video and data applications. The Novatel Wireless sells for a suggested retail price of $249.99 or is available for as low as $49.99 with a two-year subscriber agreement and mail-in-rebate.
The Novatel Wireless U720 joins three previously announced EV-DO Revision A-compatible connection cards: the Pantech PX-500, Sierra Wireless Aircard®595 and the Novatel Wireless S720. Designed for operation with compatible laptops with Type II PCMCIA slots and the Linksys Wireless G-Router for Mobile Broadband, these three devices are available through all Sprint indirect and business sales channels and online at www.sprint.com. Additionally, the Novatel Wireless U720 and the Pantech PX-500 are available in Sprint retail stores.
All of these devices will also work on the Sprint Power Vision Network where the EV-DO Revision A upgrade is not yet available. Service plans for all cards currently range from $39.99 per month for 40 MB to $79.99 per month for unlimited data usage. Customers signing a two-year Sprint subscriber agreement may also be eligible to receive unlimited data usage for $59.99 per month (no separate voice plan required).

Call me a cynic, but the timing and wording of this press release makes me think the real meaning is, "please don't kill our stock tomorrow when we post a sh*t quarter."
I do have to say that I will be very tempted to move from Verizon to Sprint if Sprint ever gets an EV-DO Rev. A ExpressCard and if Verizon is slow to roll out their Rev. A upgrade. |

Very cool. Does this mean the latest firmware out does have RevA enabled? A friend in south Kansas City was told by Sprint tech his tower is already RevA and ready to go. Will check with him if he gets anything. He has an S720 card with latest firmware.

No Austin or Dallas? Hmm...Austin was one of the first EVDO markets for Verizon and a huge tech market. Guess we'll have to wait like (most) everyone else.
Why does Sprint continue to shun ExpressCard?

They aren't shunning ExpressCards, they are shunning Rev0 cards. Would be cruel to Sprint users if they released more Rev0 cards with RevA here. RevA ExpressCards won't be out til about January from manufacturers. Maybe the schedule will get bumped up. Surprising to me that Novatel first released RevA embedded PCI Express before ExpressCards. |

I agree, that the issue isn't the form factor, but rather an EVDO Rev 0 vs. EVDO Rev A decision. It doesn't make sense for Sprint to introduce a Rev 0 device when they are going Rev A.

I just caught this. Was 158 million a month or so ago (Rev0). Target is 200m (Rev0/A) pops coverage by end of year. |

Either Sprint is stupid or you guys are nuts. Why on earth would Sprint purposely ditch every potential customer with an ExpressCard slot? It is completely obvious that Verizon got an exclusivity deal on the V640 and now Sprint is stuck without any options for ExpressCard users.
I do think that this is a good time to revisit our old discussion of the Sprint S720 Rev. A PC card vs. the Verizon V640 Rev. 0 ExpressCard. If you could, Michael, let us know how the sales of those two cards compare.
On a non-EVDO note, Sprint needs to get their act together in general. Tuesday was a perfect example of how clueless their direction is. They release an upgrade to their Mobile Broadband network that relatively few people care about. T-Mobile started *trials* of UMA and they have everyone talking. Sprint needs to get some leadership in there that has a better feel for what the public wants. They need better customer service, better handsets, a better network and new ideas like UMA that actually make people want to switch over to their service. |

Ben you are a little negative there. I can only speak from my own stand point but the Rev A is impressive to me while T Mobile announcment does little. I've had bad experiences w Verizon but I can't say that everyone and I'm not complaining about them needing to get thier act together.
As far as the express card deal goes it only makes sense not to tick off the new customers by providing them with rev o express cards when new cards will be available soon. Frankly both providers were behind on this and I look forward to the usb version more than anything. If Sprint can get the usb rev a card out within a month or so then they will be doing fine and frankly it's a better option than a rev o exp card. It's obvious you do not believe so but why bother with the negativity all the time? I loathe Cingular but I don't hang out on Cingular forums bashing them. |

T-Mobile has had wifi in places like Starbucks for several years. Unfortunately it only has a short range, much shorter than EVDO.
Wifi is also susceptible to scammers and prone to interference from a base station nearby.
The public seldom knows very much about 'what it wants' other than it just saw an advertisement but if asked for facts, results etc. has nothing to offer as an answer. Making a serious decision is a difficult task and I have met very few people who can do so but almost all of whom have quite strong opinions. |

You may be right that I am being a bit too negative here. Part of it is bitterness because I've been a long-time Sprint voice customer and I waited and waited for an ExpressCard with no luck. Finally I had to go to Verizon and get an ExpressCard from them. It also doesn't help that their customer service is terrible both over the phone and in the stores. I've called about the same overcharge on my bill 4 straight months now.
