I wouldn't put us out of communications, just reccommend they roll out different cards. I will make sure the rep is aware of this situation.
The main reason I did not want to roll them out is because the application by default pops up and says "Hey, Update me, click here to get the new firmware!"
My users would trip over themselves to click ok, and I can't blame them. I did. We all know what happens when you ASSume. |

I was located at the Detroit airport when I did the update. I updated just before boarding. I stopped in Charlotte, NC and was showing Rev-A dBm but could not connect to evdo at all. I am now in St Thomas, USVI and am getting a regular evdo signal but will not connect. I can only connect to the 1xrtt.
I am getting an error 678. What errors has everyone been seeing? If I missed that in the previous post I apologize but didn't see it.
Did anyone see an error when updating the firmware. Briefly when it was updating I got an error. It was in the status bar of the Novatel update manager. But when it was done it said completed successfully.
I was on the phone for over 2. 5 hours with a few different reps. Most where very uniformed but I did get escalated to a manager, he also didn't know much but when throwing around words he did not know and correcting a couple of explanations he tried giving me, he got on the phone with a network engineer and was told that they are looking into this.
This update, like stated in this forum, is working on some and not on others. But the reality is this is going to be a much bigger problem if not solved very soon as most user may not know of the update and the majority of the market will not receive this update until it is automatically updated by the connections manager on their monthly update, granted they have that option selected.
- What exactly you see when you hover the mouse over the signal bars
1xRTT
EVDO
Rev-A (Charlotte, NC ONLY)
- What is your City, State, Zip
Detroit, MI
Charlotte, NC
St Thomas, USVI
- Repeat test when Mode is Automatic vs. EVDO Only for S720
Done Both
- Indicate what your "Roaming" option is (Sprint vs. Automatic)
Tried both |

It would certainly be beneficial if all v3.07 installers would indicate whether their post-update performance is better, worse or the same and give the info above.

I have a scheduled phone call today with someone "way up" at Sprint later this morning. A few days ago, he mentioned they had multiple teams at Sprint (Networking, PRL, Device) all lookng at this problem. I spoke with a tech on the phone a few days ago and we did some debugging of my affected S720 and hopefully he received enough info to help troubleshoot.
I will post more info to this thread later this morning. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

| Quote: | | Seems the problem may be in the installation. Perhaps those who updated while connected to a relatively weaker signal, like 93-dBm and higher, had a faulty firmware update afterward because the signal strengh waivered at critical times during recoding. Since the firmware update is a one time event, the modem (date card) would not set itself up for recoding or repair. Just a thought... |
Definitely a good thought on that issue as also what is occurring sounds like it might very well be something PRL related also. It's quite possible that the new PRL downloaded might be missing some tower data and/or prioritizing towers incorrectly in certain areas (thus being partially to blame for this mess), however that still would not explain why those who lock evdo only can't get online when they previously could.
In any case in my location I typically see anywhere from -86dB on up to -65dB so there are times when I have stronger signal vs weaker (weakest I've seen was -110dB when the closest tower went out awhile back).
Usually speedtest wise on any given day roughly ~1.5MBit downlink and around ~10-14KBps uplink. |

I doubt it's the PRL. I downgraded connection managers, and the first thing it did was reinstall the PRL. Same effect.
As a temporary solution, we either need some way to downgrade the firmware, have a firmware "upgrade" that consists of the firmware we had before, or an address to send the cards back to Novatel to get reflashed or a new card with the older firmware. |

A Hopeful Fix
Just got off the phone with Sprint CS. He started asking all of the same questions everyone else had asked. I got upset and asked him to review the notes before asking me any more questions. I was placed on hold for 10min. The sprint rep came back on the line and stated that motorola is providing the fix for the novatel cards. I asked him if he meant novatel wireless, he said no motorola. Apperently it is a problem with markets served by Motorola CDMA Base stations. I guess motorola provides a software object binary or code that is merged/compiled into the firmware. I was told the is going to be an update released TODAY that will fix the issue!!
Woot, Woot!
FYI: My sprint case IDs are: 14665065-061025 and 14667834-061026 |

That would be great! I just got off the phone and the advanced data tech. support person had no clue of any kind.
I went to a Sprint owned tech. service center and the only thing I got out of that was expalining to the 'tech' what Rev 0 and Rev A was.

Has anyone else had problems connecting to EVDO before you updated? I've had the PX-500 for three weeks, and I've had five bars of EVDO for the first two. This week it started going all 1x on me, so I called Sprint. My rep had me update my firmware to "fix the problem." So now, of course, it's even worse. |

I had a detailed conversation this morning with Sprint.
They will giving us a statement to release up here on EVDOforums.
I can tell you after talking to them in detail, that everyone will sleep real good tonight after reading what they have to say.
Also, I think when this is over, people will be impressed with how quickly Sprint moved.
FYI, your cards will not have to be replaced, nothing wrong with the firmware.

| This would indeed be very good news for consumers and Sprint. Now I can safely roll the rest of my cards out. If they deliver, I will continue to be highly imprressed with their data service. |

Sorry for the late post. I'm clueless why the EVDO signal strength drops into the mud when Mode set to Automatic. Some other posts in this thread also note exactly -115dBm for EVDO as well. Curious.
All tests ran with Roaming = Sprint Only in Dayton Ohio 45342.
==================
Mode=1xRTT Only
Signal Strength:
1xRTT: -81dBm
Connects 1xRTT.
==================
Mode=EVDO Only
Signal Strength
EVDO: -77dBm (note strong EVDO signal strength)
Doesn't connect. Error 678: The remote computer did not respond.
==================
Mode=Automatic
Signal Strength
1xRTT: -81dBm*
EVDO: -115dBm (note weak EVDO signal strength)
Connects 1xRTT.

I wonder where this leaves Powerbook users who upgraded, and their cards are no longer recognized? |
