Just received the following email from Sprint:

Quote:
We've have isolated the issue to infrastructure in the Chicago/Cleveland market only. Engineers are working on a patch.

I think the problem is a little more widespread than Chicago/Cleveland. I am in Columbus, Ohio and have installed this bum update. I should have read evdoinfo before updating the firmware.

My S720 is now unable to connect EVDO. I can only connect 1xRTT (Yuck!).
The signal is showing: -85dbm 1xRTT & -115dbm EVDO.

With the 3.6.5 and matching firmware I would have excellent coverage. My normal connects were SPCS EVDO @ Home -81dbm and -85dbm at work.

I installed PCS_CM3_V3.07.005n.msi yesterday before discovering this thread and had the same connection problem as others. The "EVDO Only" setting, seems to work; however, there is clearly a degraded EVDO sensitivity. EVDO download speeds are now continually 100-200kbs, whereas they were 280-780kbs with v3.06.005.

Afer installing v3.07, I wanted to be sure everything was in order so I tried the "Update Now" function. Whenever I choose it in the SCM menu (or in Settings>General), it indicates I need to upgrade to a new Sprint Connection Manager file; however, when I click Update Now, an error occurs (see below).

Would a couple of you see if you have the same problem when you check for updates? Thanks

Sycamore, IL. 60178
S620
1xRTT -72 dBm
EVDO -98 dBm (Best EVDO signal ever)
1xRTT-works fine.

There is definitely degraded reception with v3.07.005n and a glitch connecting to strong digital roaming signals. Testing v3.07 as EVDO Only at a local Starbucks, SCM indicated five-bar -58dBm digital roaming signal, but could not complete a connection. It would finally downgrade to a no-bar Sprint EVDO signal, but could not hold a connection more than a few seconds at a time. This was a place that gets strong EVDO connections with v3.06.

As we all work through this, we should give our cities and the RTT & EVDO signal strengths. It will help Sprint TS & Novatel avoid running up false alleys (like the Chicago-Cleveland one). The solution to this will require coding in a SCM update to reset connection priorities amongst available signals. What they will be able to do to get back to v3.06 reception levels, I don't know.

Is it possible to roll back to the S720 firmware included with the 3.6.5?
I have reinstalled 3.6.5 but it will not roll back the firmware.

It would seem the 'fix agent' can't read the case notes...someone called and left a voice mail saying "I understand you are seeing slow EVDO data speeds after your upgrade. Go to speakeasy.net and test your speeds and call us back."

However, he left no name or call back number leaving me to call into the general support line and go through the whole process again. That person, while very nice, could not even update the case notes and had to 'note the account' which he said he hoped the fix agent read next time he looked at my account. Which will be when?? Who knows.

I had a good felling on the first call but now it seems Sprint support is just like the others. We will see where this ends up but at least I am not alone Smile

UPDATE: Sprint called back. They said I had a corrupted Connection Manager and to DL the current version from their Web site. Of course this did not work. Waiting for another call Sad

If it is of value my case number (sent to a 'Fix Agent' by PC card support) is 14654442-061024

So, we are all in Illinois. Lets think positive and that Chicago is going to EVDO Rev A right now Smile Wishful thinking, we are not suppose to get it until Q1 07.

I will have some people in the know look into why this is happening....

I am having the same problem as well. I have about 10 of these that I am about to roll out to users. Glad I tested one first.

I just called Sprint to see what kind of crazy answer they would come up with, and I got:

"Oh, yeah the firmware update is a problem. You'll need to take the card back to a store and get different ones. You should get the 595 cards anyway, they are much better."

Does this make any sense to you guys? I would think that Sprint would immediately take this firmware down so more people don't zap their cards.

Do you think the Sierra Wireless 595 cards are really any better?

Shelby NC 28150

Just an FYI, after the update I am seeing RevA signal in my area. It just wants to connect to 1xRTT and it trying to force it to EVDO results in the dreaded "The other party computer did not respond..."

>>[nitrox] Is it possible to roll back to the S720 firmware included with the 3.6.5?

Advanced Tech Support (Chris) confirmed to me at 7 PM on Tuesday (24th) that you could not rollback the firm ware. Waiting for new firmware and software or getting another pre-upgraded card is the only way to get back to the performance under v3.06.005n.

>>[deperson] It would seem the 'fix agent' can't read the case notes... Sprint called back. They said I had a corrupted Connection Manager...

The first level message responders are traffic cops, as are the first TS personnel. You may get one who has a higher level of techno expertise, but it is the exception. Best to explain your problem using technical language they cannot understand. That usually causes them to pass you to Advanced TS.

>>[digitrip] I would think that Sprint would immediately take this firmware down so more people don't zap their cards.

I suggested that to Chris in the same call at 7 PM Tuesday. Now that many have called in problems with the update, it is incredible that Sprint has not removed v3.07 and left a note directing those in Rev A areas only to a different link.

Michael, please contact your friend at Advanced TS and give him the link to this thread to try to minimize further casualties. The rest of us should refer Sprint to it when we call as well - www.evdoforums.com/thread3605.html.

ebiz,

Agreed 100%. I am going to have to call our corporate office and advise they stop oprdering these immediately. Becuase we are a large organization, we have a rep that handles our account. Since we have this rep, I was more or less told that we can't take our cards to a store to swap them out. We have to pack them back up and send them back to some depot.

If I had just proceeded to send these to the users I am responsible for, I would have created quite a headache for myself.

I told the 1st level TS the same thing you told Chris. Here we are trying to save Srint time and money and we are getting the run around.

It is sad that such an action is the only way to protect your company, but since we have no assurance that Sprint will remove v3.07.005n and disconnect the firmware upgrade, you'd be at their mercy... and you could potentially put your comany out of mobile data communications. The S720 worked well with Sprint Connection Manager v3.06.005n before the firmware upgrade.

Be sure to give your sales rep this thread so the problem will be addressed.

UPDATE:

Sprint called back again and ask I do another speed test. Not good. The advanced support agent could offer no help other than to dispatch a field service tech. to physically inspect the tower!!

Which tower I can't say as I gave him 3 zip codes and 2 physical addresses and 5 towns that it does not work in. Argggg.
