Some questions for the EVDO wiz's out there...
1) Any luck playing Real Time Strategy PC games with EVDO?
ex. Company of Heroes, C&C Generals
2) Any problems playing any other sort of game other than 1st person shooters?
ex. Battlefield 2
3) Any problems or downside in using an EvDO phone as your internet connection device instead of a dedicated EVDO card?
4) I'm thinking about holding out for RevA. Is it worth waiting for a RevA phone or card?
5) Any recomendations for a PC gamer considering EVDO would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance. |

RTS should be fine for EVDO Rev 0 but not for fps's obviously. I sneak in and play DAoC an mmorpg at work or when travelling occasionally and while it works about as well as dial up for latency it could be a little better honestly. No one has tested ReV A gaming yet, at least not that has been reported but a 80-100ms ping would be a godsend if that materalizes.
Rev A capable cards are coming out now as well as USB devices soon hopefully but as you probably read here the firmware on the cards have not been released to support Rev A as of yet. If you are in an EVDO area or travel to one frequently EVDO cards should be fine for RTS and mmorpgs but 180-300 ms latency will kill you in any fast paces fps games. The latency problems on these other games are decreased because of game mechanics.
I am still stuck on dial up/1xRTT at home and frankly I has less link deaths from EVDO than from dial up and Vent/ Team Speak works adequately but w/ a little lag. Don't even bother trying to play on 1xRTT though
I have read but not personally confirmed that people are getting slightly higher pings at times using a phone as a modem but that could be to a number of variables and not the system itself. |

Good to see another Battlefield 2 gamer
Its been my experience that the best gameplay is below 100ms ping, while the game remains "tolerable" up to 200 ms ping. Anything above that is dicey. I wouldn't recommend it.
This is my speculation....
Frankly, I would be surprised seeing pings below 100 ms. for the simple reason that enviromental factors will decide that quality of connection. If Rev. A shaves ping times by 50% from Rev. O, then it will be considered a success, but that might still be too high for a gamer who does FPS. For other types of games, Rev. A should be fine (as a matter of fact, Rev. O is probably sufficient for these kinds of games).
So that being said, yes, at this stage of the game I would wait for Rev. A. I will also guess that a PC Card solution will offer the best results as well. |

| It depends on the tower you're connected to. I'm a trucker, and in a different location every night. Sometimes I can get good game going, sometimes I can't. My problem with the whole thing is the 5 gig cap. I played a good 2 hour session of Team Fortress 2 the other night, and chewed up almost 400 megabytes. I probably won't be doing that again until i get a good Wifi connection. I do play Warcraft 3 against my 16 year old nephew and his friends back home pretty often, and rarely have any problems. I don't think RTS games are quite as demanding. |
