My firned cruises the web with his Verizon Motorola e815 using bluetooth -- works great. I go to buy the same phone, and it has been discontinued. The sales rep tells me they now charge to have the bleutooth EVDO web access enabled.
Is this true?
They don't sell the e815 so I was thinking about getting the RAZR v3, but supposedly I won't be able to cruise the web unless I get some $60/month.
Tell me it's not so. |

Yep, you now have to pay to play
The RAZR will not authenticate unless you have the broadbandaccess plan ($59.99) on it. That allows you to connect via BlueTooth or USB. I have a RAZR that I use personally, and and I tried, and once I added the correct $59.99 option, it worked great. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

OOOOOOOhhh
How about this: I buy a used e815 from Ebay and sign it up....problem solved. I get free EVDO right?
That is if it's the software in the phone that's putting up the block -- not Verizon's airwaves...
I think that might be my route around this... |

| So none of verizon's phones can be tethered without paying the $59.99 per month or are there verizon phones that you can tether and use it as an EVDO connection? I know I can use my sprint samsung a900 phone without a problem. And if one does sign up for verizon and the phone as modem plan are they going to cancel you if you hit 10 GB a month and if they cancel will they terminate both the phone and phone as modem plan without paying an ETF? |

I have friends that want to use a cellphone to connect to VZ's "Enhanced Services" capability if they are in an "Extended Network."
The VZ coverage map says that to do that they must have a PDA, Blackberry, Smartphone or air card with a Broadband plan. Some have said that using a PDA, etc. is no longer necessary in those "Extended Network" areas.
Does anyone know what the true requirement is?
Thanks,
Bill |

Bill | Verizon Wireless' Phone as a modem plan is called "BroadbandAccess Connect". It is at http://b2b.vzw.com/productsservices/wirelessinternet/broadbandaccessconnect.html and costs sixty bucks with a qualifying voice plan or $75 without. If you already have a PDA or Blackberry with a data plan ($45) it costs $15 ($30 without a voice plan) more making the total $60 ($75).
The website lists the phones that have BroadbandAccess Connect capability.
By the way, Windows mobil, and I think PalmOS PDAs can be hacked to allow them to tether, but that would be a violation of your contract's TOS and make you liable to have your data plan terminated. |

Last time I asked sprint about tethering, they wanted to charge as much as verizon for the data plan. Verizon just does a better job of keeping you from doing it yourself.
It's possible to unlock with ANY verizon phone.. Google is your friend, howardforums is your friend.

|

In March the IT guy in my business told me he paid Verizon $15 a month on top of his regular Blackberry data plan and was able to tether his Blackberry to his laptop to use the Internet via the Blackberry, not dialing with it as a modem. He downloaded a piece of software from Verizon called VZ Access Manager, installed it, chose the National Access/Broadband choice, clicked CONNECT and voila, he was on the Internet. In areas with EV-DO he was at quite acceptable speeds for working.
I thought this was too good to be true so called Verizon and found this was actually available for my MacBook. I downloaded the software, chose Mac OS X and the Blackberry options and connected while still talking with the tech support person at Verizon. The whole operation took less than 10 minutes.
The past 6 weeks have been heaven. I could pull off the road, open my laptop and work on strange Web applications that were almost impossible to handle with my Blackberry (7250) alone.
A week or so ago, this all stopped cold. At the same time my phone gave only a busy signal to callers and did not ring on my end. Yesterday I called Verizon to try to get both problems fixed. They had me download and reinstall the software to make my phone ring again. In the process, my VZ Access Manager software quit working. The technician had me re-download this, and the choice of a Blackberry was no longer available. Only the Motorola Q was available under PDA's or phones.
As you can imagine, I am devistated. A Verizon person has tried to tell me it was a freak accident that I could ever connect and that Verizon does not support Blackberry use with a Mac laptop. I smell a rat here, because Blackberry was a choice for my software when I downloaded this in March. It certainly worked fine for 6 weeks. The technician told me it was a driver issue.
If anyone has a clue what I can do to get this access back again, I will be MOST appreciative!!!! |
